  • HELP PLEASE! LN130 '92 IMPORT-VIBRATION & POWER LOSE PROBLEMS.. :o(

    Hi there.

Am in need of your experienced expertise please.

The truck developed a most disconcerting problem 2 days ago.
Going up a say 6 deg or so gradient, stuck behind a road sweeper for 300yrds roughly at a crawl. Then proceeded to overtake the sweeper & within 20secs, which I can only describe as when a petrol engine looses spark in one or more cylinders, the engine was runnin' real lumpy with vibration & lost alot of power.
No smoke, engine temp ok. Got to top of hill & pulled over to take a peek.
Oil level ok, couldn't see at 1st glance any major sign of oil blowing anywhere; vacuum lines that had slipped off.
Re-started truck & after min or 2 seemed to be ok. Taking it home from work, vibration & power loss returning now & again. Now, the vibration is bad enough for it to be put 'out of service' until I can either get it to someone down in the East Devon area who knows these baby's as I don't have access to a ramp, or try & tackle it meself with ur help.

Am going to get under it now & take a peek & see what I can see.

New noises it has developed are:
When reversing & then selecting Drive, there's a clunk noise (one clunk only!) coming from mid to rear section.
When cruising & gently come off the gas pedal, get a high-pitched whining noise from front end whivh goes after you accelerate again.
Lots of white/blue/grey smoke (yes I would say it looks like all 3 together) when going uphill (almost, but not quite a James Bond), fine on the flat.

Last oil change 2k's ago-new filter/replaced fuel filter & air filter (which incidently I checked for any kinda blockage)

Sorry to write such a long winded post, but I guess too much information is the best way forward...maybe

Will report back any findings asap, but in the meantime if your acute truck senses can offer up starting points, that would be soo appreciated - thanks guys (& dolls)

Can you hear a hissing sound when you remove the fuel filler cap?
Whats the transmission fluid condition/level like? (Check level with engine idling)
Not been using 4WD on the road have you?

Undertand this is a 2.4 td ?. Clunking from the trans is usally down to low ATF levels, to check, engine running, handbrake ON. Move selector from park to low stopping at each gear for a few seconds, do this twice, keep engine running, and remove the trans dipstick, it's marked HOT // COLD if low top up, thru dip stick tube to correct level. Next, check turbo pipe work for security, whine, may be an induction whistle, possiblly a turbo pipe clip come off. (an air leak in the induction system). Also check the turbo pressure sensor pipe has'nt come off this may be your loss of power.
      God luck hope this helps.
If it aint broke, keep goin' till it is.

A vince said, check the hissing cap thing. Also check the fuel and air filters are OK. It's also possible you may have choked an injector or two.
Do you know that, with a 50 character limit, it's

          Cheers guys for your advice.

I had a look last night. Water Sensor had come off the fuel filter(would that makes any difference?)...
but think I located the vibration problem (& possibly power loss??).
The spider bearing on the back axle looks well shafted. Don't think it got any love from its other owners-maybe Had the truck since April, so I guess that includes me too

any tips/ideas on how to source the spacer sizes or is it literaly a case of buying a range of em & see what happens when i re-assemble the unit?
Sorry, but I haven't checked prices for any parts as of yet. What sorta damage to the wallet would I be looking at? Are those SST things expensive???

Thanks again for your time & energy

i take it you mean the rear prop shaft uj has gone. You can buy those from roughtrax easy enough or if the whole shaft is knackered then buy one off of a breaker.Be aware the manual and auto prop shafts are different lengths and are not interchangable between auto and manual

Well have got the shaft off no problem.
Any hints or tips to get the little b*gger out!!??
Don't have a vice or uj bearing remover-have managed to get 2 bearings off, with brass tube, hammer & brut force, but can't work the others off at all
If I take the prop to the local grease monkey, what can I expect to part with (if they'll do the job that is)...??

                Cheers guys

Did you ever fix this? Mine did exactly the same thing this morning, just wondering what caused yours.

                        ello...
Turned out to be the UJ on the rear prop. Poor thing hadn't had a greasing for a while.
                        Hope you locate the trouble

                        cheerz
