  • Exhaust Front Pipe Remove/Replace

Just thought I'd post this as I couldn't find a definitive guide on this relatively simple job:-

Model: LN130 2.4 TD (AUTO) RHD
Work Done:- Remove and replace exhaust front pipe genuine Toyota off/on
    Elapsed time:- 45mins

Notes: Genuine Toyota AUTO down pipe has heatshield surrounding the top flex joint and this makes the job somewhat harder as access is limited

    1) Under drivers side of vehicle (offside)
    • Remove two heatshields one attached to floor pan (2xnut - 10mm socket) and one attached to chassis rail (3xbolt - 12mm socket).
    • Remove two bolts (17mm socket) securing exhaust bracket to g/box housing - long extension required for upper.

    2) Drivers side (offside) wheelarch
    • Remove inner wheelarch access plate.
    • Locate exhaust pipe clamp which clamps exhaust to the gearbox bracket of which the two bolts were removed in 1) above. Undo the single bolt on the clamp - access is limited as bolt points down TSK TSK! Withdraw the g/box bracket from under the car.

    3) Under bonnet
    • Remove 4 heatshields from around turbo, brake vac and down pipe.
    • DO NOT attempt to remove down pipe from turbo elbow in situ. It's much easier to remove the down pipe with elbow attached - remove 4 nuts attaching elbow to turbo body.

    4) Under passenger side (nearside)
    • Remove two BOLTS (14mm socket) securing front pipe to mid pipe (nuts are welded to mid pipe flange) - expect these to be corroded - soak well in releasing fluid and take it easy.
    • Remove bolt (12mm socket) securing front pipe to body bracket - WARNING front exhaust is now free and liable to drop!

    5) Under drivers side of vehicle (offside)
    • Manouvre pipe from under the car but note it's pretty tight between chassis rail and g/box but it does fit if g/box bracket and 2 x heatshields have been removed.

    6) Have Pint/Cuppa and admire new pipe and gaskets

    7) Fitting the new one is essentially the reversal of removal - use new gaskets and jointing compound on the front/mid joint (ensure old gasket is not left on the mid section. I find it best to leave all fitting loose until pipe is in position then tighten.

    Hope this helps!
