  • check engine light

Hi need a bit of advice my surf ssrx 2.4 turbo is doing my head in!
After driving for about 1 hour the check engine light comes on and the car gets sluggish even though the turbo is working the green turbo light doesent come on, I have noticed that when I put diesel in the cap hisses when I undo it, I have only owned the surf for 3 weeks and I think this was the reason I got it so cheap!!!

Sounds like the breather is blocked. Either clear it or drill a hole in your filler cap.

do a search on here & it will tell you how to read the warning light.

The number of flashes indicated the rough idea of the problem

Hi Nev the fault finder gave me these 2 problems TURBO BOOST PRESSURE SENSOR and TIMER CONTROL VALVE (pump).
            Whats my next step?
When the light comes on it feels like it is running out of diesel even though the there is plenty of fuel in the tank.
            Cheers

There's a breather valve on top of the fuel tank to prevent a vacuum forming, it may be blocked with dirt or mud. Just remove it and give it a wash and blow through.
The turbo isn't boosting because the sensor is receiving a signal from the fuel pump (via the ECU) that not enough fuel is available.
Clean the breather valve and re-set the ECU by disconnecting the batteries for 20 minutes or pulling the ECU/IGN fuse.

The Ford Transit Turbos had a similar problem. They had a Lucas Epic injection pump hich like the Surf had a fly-by-wire throttle. They would give tons of random fault codes when checked on a Lucas diagnostics system and even Lucas couldn't understand it. It turned out to be an electronic fault in the injection pump. Fortunately in the case of the Transit, you could just throw the unreliable Lucas pump in the bin and fit a 2nd hand Bosch pump from a normally aspirated Transit. It does sound remarkably similar to the Ford fault, hope it's not your pump.

                  Does sound like fuel flow.

As I always say in response to something like this, change your fuel filter. Its a few quid, and you dont know when it was last changed (if ever!)

Could be that the cr@p settles out so its OK for a while, then its all drawn into the filter itself after a bit of driving. Turning corners might change it because it causes the fuel to slosh about.

Do the simple, cheap things first before worrying about pumps and ECUs!
