  • Fuel pump timing

Does anyone know of a specialist in the Basingstoke/North Hampshire area who can check/sort out the fuel pump timing on a 2.4 Surf?

I've just gone through the pain and expense of a new head on mine, but there's a hell of a lot of smoke on starting, it takes two goes to catch unless I rev it heavily, and there is a distinct rattle. A few people I've spoken to reckon its the fuel pump timing needing sorting, (lots of other theories, but that's the one most people come up with!), but I can't find anyone locally who can do the job - apparently it needs to be set up "offline"?

    Thanks

i would say its the glowplugs, one or more not working, try this first, if it isnt that then thew timing belt needs checking to make sure it has been put on correctly when the head was fitted, i take it this has only happened since

Newbury 4x4 are supposed to be very good - they've been recommended on here by a few guys who've used them. Bet they have a specialist they deal with if they cant do it themselves.

Yeah I would check the glow plugs first as well. Biggest mistake on rebuilding the head is the connections for the glow plugs buzz bar are but back wrong. Check fuse for glow plugs, its a common mistake.

The timing belt has been checked and is apparently ok, and the glow plugs are new, glow fuse is ok. Maybe it is the glow plugs, but I'd assumed as they're new, they'd be ok.

they should be but i'd test them first, also look if the wire is connected right on the manifold or they wont work at all

try rayner engineering in Newbury (sterling industrial estate, kings road), they're bosch approved diesel specialists and any company i've worked for have always used them for pump problems... only others i've been reccommended was a fred in the shed in east london so i think they're one of the best for a long way.

family run company and all... even main dealers use them.

It does seem to be much better when warm... When cold, there are huge clouds of dirty white/grey smoke. When warm, there's much much less.

Here is the correct way the washers and insulators are where the glowplug busbar is mounted on the manifold:

                    10mm nut

                    steel washer

                    black plastic insulator

                    wiring harness

                    busbar

                    blue insulator

                    manifold

Sounds like plug problems if it starts fine when warmed up. Also check there ar two wires connected to the bus bar, one is bolted on the other is a push fit on to a male connector

                        same

my have the same to do on mine....looks like a war zone smoke grenade when i first start up!!!

Is there any visible signs to see if the plugs are on there way out once you've taken them out? Have my spare head with all the bits, may see if i could salvage one or two to make a full set.

hold the body of the plug on the negative terminal of the battery, put power to the small threads on the end, it should start glowing straight away

Thanks guys, really appreciate the advice. I'll have a look myself, but since I don't know a glow plug from a bath plug, I'll probably end up trying one of the garages recommended!
