Just got back from scotland with the caravan, did about 1550 kms in total with a 22 ft caravan fully loaded, strange thing but the gear changer suround (auto box 2.4 surf ssrx)was on some parts was totally cool, even up big hills, then on flat motorways and hills to, it was red hot, i mean very hot is this normal http://www.hiluxsurf.co.uk/forums/im...ilies/lost.gif

dont worry about it, it does get bl00dy hot. if you are towing, it may pay to look into getting a separate atf cooler, it will stop the heat from the auto box being dumped into the radiator, but as for the hot transmission tunnel, its fine.
    Non intercooled nothing.

Don't worry, mine's the same when towing, my left foot is melting off, don't forget the exhaust is under there too, but the tranny temp and engine temp never alter. I may look into a tranny cooler later this year, but I need somewere to fit it, might remove air con, it don't work any way, and fit it under there. Will it need a stat? any ideas.
If it aint broke, keep goin' till it is.

            Tranny Oil cooler

I tow a 20ft twin axle Coachman and before I towed I bought an oil cooler from e-bay.
It was about 12" long 6" high (13 rows) and 3" thick.
I mounted it in front of the A/C condenser and quite low down with a couple of brackets welded to the metalwork.
I piped it up so the hot tranny oil goes through the new air/oil cooler before it goes in to the rad cooler and this works fine for me.
On the engine water temp gauge I put a small mark with a Tipex pen dead in line with the gauge needle on normal engine temp (not towing).
This mark is a little (3-4mm) below the mid point of the gauge and is a good ref point.
I have seen the gauge clibe to about 3/4 up on the scale but it falls quite quickly when the hill has passed.
I have a new rad ready to fit but I have not needed to do so yet and I have never had to add water so far.
For the record the cooler cost £10 and £4 postage well spent I think.

            Regards.
            Mike

mine gets quite warm ,about 3/4 way up the guage when doing BIG hill climbs, and forgetting to put the selector in 2nd.
              Non intercooled nothing.

likewise, towing a caravan fully loaded the engine temp used to rise worryingly, bought an ATF cooler put it in line before the engine rad and now no matter what the abuse the engine temp barely moves. Last month to Cornwall with 4 people loads of weight in the truck and a loaded caravan one of the hills got us down to 20mph with it floored even working that hard the temp barely moved, before the ATF cooler that would have cooked it under half the stress. I did think I should have bought the 3.0 though, 20 mph is a little slow, I was considering stopping and selecting low range which isn't great in 60mph
