I've seen where people have replaced the cracked head with a 3l head but shouldn't the new model replacement head have the head cracking issues worked out after all these years. The 2.4 engine is still in production is it not?

Be aware that 3l is an engine code, the displacement is actually 2.8 litres. The 3 litre surfs have a 1KZT-E

Yes, a 2.8 head is a direct replacement for the 2.4 head and has absolutely no effect on performance or anything else.
Often there's something that triggers the crack so once you've got your 2.8 head you need to check your cooling system is 100% working.
How's the weather over there? I'll be over in a fortnight.

Yes I figure my cooling system had some flaw along the way somewhere.Replacing Head,Rad,Water Pump,Thermostat,Timing belt,Piston Rings. Not cheap but I don't have any other option at this point.Fixed my truck is worth something..the way it is now it's just a big paperweight. The weather here has been a little cool lately but it usually warms up in the afternoon quite nicely. Go to weather.ca and simply click on Vancouver to get an update. Cheers.
