  • Fuel Filter, maybe not allowinging car to start.HELP!!!

    Hi ther,

I went out to start the Surf after not using it for a couple of days due to my uncle running it to work.i only bought it last week for £1500.deal of the century if u ask me!!!Or so i thought!lol.

Car is turning over but after several attempts to start it the car was starting to die.as i am very new to the 4x4 scene i was kind of stumped.I took the batterys out and charged the two of them to find one was goosed.but put the good one bk in (13.2v) and gave it a go.nothing.Turning over but not starting.this lead me to think it waznt getting fuel.i started pushing the plunger on the fuel filter and after pumping the plunger for a dozen times it wasnt firming up.speaking to my uncle,he reckons that it mite be drawing air in from somewhere. and mite need replacing.Cany anybody please advise me of anything else i can try to do in order to get my pride and joy back on the road. Or if ther is stuff i should be looking out for!

ps. Anybody know whats the best workshop manuals for my 1991,2446cc hilux Surf (Import) SSR-G.

    ppppplllllzzzzzzzzz!!!!!!! HELP!

Diesels are more susceptible to problems with dodgy batteries, could be that?

Where in Grangemouth are you? I could nip round and have a look some night after work if you like?

I had a load of problems with mine not starting with fuel not getting through if she'd been sitting for a while. Had suggestions of changing the primer pump which is a nice easy job and checking that the fuel tank breather wasn't blocked (is there a hiss when you open the fuel filler?) as this could be causing a vacuum drawing the fuel back to the tank. Eventually (after being towed from Southampton to Middlesbrough for 10 hours using 3 different tow-trucks!) a garage found that two of my injectors were letting air back in, putting redex in to try to clean them turned a small leak into a big one so sitting for a couple of hours was enough to cause problems!

Also check the glowplugs're working properly and the fuse for them and I'd get the battery sorted as well!

Hope you find the problem as I know it's annoying, mine started playing up a couple of weeks after I bought her, which was especially frustrating when I bought her for the hilux reliability!
