  • Me heads gorn

    Hi All
I voted to say my 2.4 td Surf acquired in February did not have any cylinder head problems. On Sunday morning the dreaded white steam billowed from the exhaust. Fourteen miles from home 100 yards up a greasy lane complete with trailer clay pigeon traps, clay pigeons, cartridges, shotguns, wife and son.
The wife’s RAV 4 normally did the job but I felt a bigger stronger 4x4 would be better.
Fortunately my Garage man was at the shoot with his recovery truck.
The parts required to replace the head cost £818 including VAT and carriage
from UK Cylinder Heads. They do require the old cylinder head even with a new one being supplied ( carriage to return old block costs £12.50)
All I can do now is hope the cylinder block has not corroded away like Emms and Jims.
Bless all Surfs and those who ride in them.
    Don
    Still rolling and waving

      Hello fellow sufferers (Surfferers)
New head purchased from UK Cylinder Heads and fitted. Old cylinder head cracked between cylinder head curved reliefs. Number four piston showing minor corrosion. The cylinder head above number four had definite corrosion. A problem existing for some time. The gaskets supplied by UK Cylinder heads were of such poor quality I replaced them with Toyota parts as far as possible.
Running the truck without the thermostat for a day or two to eliminate air locks hopefully.
I still enjoy driving the Surf but the constant expense of maintenance is a little worrying and I am getting too old to keep lifting cast iron diesel head about. Maybe I should buy a Pajero?

Dont let it get to you! Once its been replaced you wont have to do it again. Pretty soon you will forget about it and the big hole it left in your wallet and you'll be grinning again, thinking whaat a cool rig you have!

Delboy is right.. theres lot of folks on here who've done the head then never had much to do again apart from routine maintenance and trail damage.

Although, like any 10+ year old car things will wear out and need replacing....

Dont get a Paj, give the surf a chance now she has a new head!!!

                  Keep on surfing

Thanks for the words of advice guys. Was feeling a bit down with the prospect of £1k+ bill after my head went this morning.

Still, the rad was replaced a couple of months ago, so hopefully you're right, and all it'll from now on is routine stuff.

After a lack luster Nissan Mistral, I love my surf!

                      No head.....

But on the bright side, I've had to take the day off work! Day time TV and a pack of choccy hob-nobs, feet up on the sofa! What more could you ask for?!
