  • aircon belt?

hello & happy easter to you all, just a quick question, when veiwing the aircon belt from the front of the engine theres a small steel roller which seems to contact the right hand side of the belt, however when the engine is running this roller only seems to contact the belt every now and then, its doing a very good job of polishing the back of the belt but not much else. does it have to be adjusted into the belt to act as a tensioner, the surface of this roller seems to be going blue, which means it must be getting very hot, but the belt seems to be correctly tensioned.

If the belt is a little worn then may not contact Idler all the time.Check that the Idler is turning freely and the bearing is not dry or rough. These are not sealed and can easily get water or dirt in them.Replaced the bearing in mine a while ago.Fairly simple job.Undo nut at back remove circlip knock out old bearing and press in new one and replace circlip and reinstall.Bearings are a common size available at most bearing suppliers. Can't remember size at the moment.

ps Just remembered mine had a wire clip rather than a circlip.I replaced with a circlip because the wire one was very rusty.

The idler is halfway down the longest travel of all the belts between pulleys. Its been said before that this is probably there to limit lateral travel in the belt

I'm pretty sure that the belt should not run on this idler except at occasional times when it deflects - engine starting, accelleration etc. The Idler is just there as Jim says to limit the travel.

          Cheers

After replacing bearing and with a new belt mine runs on idler all the time. This will change as belt wears.

This can also vary with brand and type of belt used. There will be slight differences between brands and even batches of belts so some will just contact idler and others will not.Either way is ok.

Yes I agree, I changed the glow plugs yesterday and noticed that pulley does'nt even spin most of the time.

I was just about to ask that very same question, mine doesnt contact the pulley as far as i can see but it has in the past as there are wear marks on the roller.
If it aint broke...........give it some more abuse!!!!!!!!
