Bore liners are the cylinders the pistons move in, the outsides are in contact with the coolant and connected to the block at the top and bottom. If one were cracked hot gasses could be forced into the cooling system causing pressure build up and venting, coolant loss and maybe airlocks causing overheating.

I have a question for you, have you changed your radiator?

        Helen,
See your tame mechanic, changed the thermostat, has he filled up the cooling system correctly. It takes ages on a Surf - or sometimes seems that way. Mechanics who do not know about Surfs, think once expansion tank is full then system is full, which it usually is'nt. Check out links on forum on how to fill up the coolant system after its been drained.

May not be the coolant system but better to try that first than Cracked Liner
        direction until you are sure.

Check forum links then speak with mechanic again, & get him to do the coolant fill with you watching & helping ???? ( if you know what i mean ) first.

        Good Luck

Ok, I asked because I've had to change rads on two 'older' cars of mine that were boiling up because the radiator tubes were blocked and both times that was all it took to sort them.

Sadly I can't spend time with them, i'm at work. I'm getting most of this second/third hand from my boyfriend. The garage rang him. It's his Surf but I got access to the Forum and he doesn't. They have made sure they have done any refills properly, we rang and checked and they are aware and being careful about it. I believe they are now going to pressure test the block. It's a bit like chinese whispers as the car is at another site where they do all the engine work. so info comes from them to garage to Tom to me..... I have to go to another office now so they'll just have to get on and sort it. Thanks for your help, I have passed it on and can only wait........

I know what you are going through as I recently suffered a simailar experience. If you do a search for a post called Heads I lose you will see my story. The outcome was I needed an engine re-build. Look here at pic No 1010021, and you will see the liners being fitted. Cylinders can become porous from head/gasket failure, and they need to be bored out and re-lined.
