  • Can anyone please help? ENGINE PROBLEMS...

    Hello,
I've posted on here from time to time. This time I'm completely done. I have a 2.4L Hilux and it got hot a few times (4 to be exact) then one day I went for lunch and white smoke everywhere. I got it towed to a mechanic and ordered a 3L head kit from here... (www.rockymountainimports.net) the mechanic said he fixed the problem and gave me the keys back after dropping $4500 CAD dollars. I now have more serious problems. The vehicle rides ROUGH, barely idles, minor knocking in the engine, white smoke off of startup, poor fuel consumption, lack of power (70km/h up a hill top speed - before it could easily do 100km/h on the same hill) The mechanic is re-checking the timing to make sure that things are inline but then is out of ideas. I also did a fuel injector clean after I got the car back.
    Nothing seemed to work.

I'm into this truck now for $6,000.00 CAD and honestly cannot really afford anymore. I would like to get this fixed but if its too much I now have a giant heap of metal in my parking spot.

I hope someone could shed some light on this.

That sounds a lot like timing problems. Also check all the vacuum hoses are hooked up in the right order.

If the engine is strugling to idle, it's the timing. If you can here a squeeking noise from the engine when idleing, then you need a new crank shaft. The white smoke means you have moisture burning in the engine, try bleeding the water from the fuel filter (procedure covered in the owners manual), if that doesn't work then water is getting into your fuel tank. As for the lack of power, are you sure it's running on all 4 cylinders? If not, then again, timing. If it is running on all four cylinders and you have very little power, then it sounds like you are loosing compression. This could get very expenisive for you. By the way, is your Mechanic a diesel engine/injection specialist or does he usualy do petrol engines? He should have more answers than he has given you. Chances are you are paying him by the hour while he is scratching his head trying to figure out what's wrong.

      Sorry for the bad news.

Hi have you got this sorted ???, If you haven't this may help, all the symptom's you describe are from the crankshaft timing being incorrectly set.
It is so easy to assume that the crank timing is set by the pointer on the block to the mark on the crank pulley. Well it's not. There is a blip mark on the crank with the pully removed that lines up to a mark on the engine front cover not the pointer. If It's set wrong, This put's the crank timing out by about two teeth advanced on the timing belt if it's set to the pointer and crank pulley, Although the engine will reluctantly run, it smokes heavy white smoke from unburnt fuel, will try to idle very rough and slowly, and give little power. The noise you hear is possibly the valves hitting the top of the pistons very slightly.
Remedy, get a new mechanic and sue the other. Good Luck
IT's not how you get in it . IT's how you get out.
