did I buy a dud!?

Hey folks,
Baught my 1st surf, 1992 2.4, spotless!!.
But 2 days after i got it it died, found a length of wire were the 40amp fuse should be. Got it to run back to my house on a 50amp (long story).

But on the way home after bout 3 hrs of driving it started dieing when i came off the gas at round abouts etc. thaught it might be the idile...adjusted it, got it to run. But the next day it died.
The engine will turn over but not fire!! Emptied the fuel filter and turned her over again, checked the filter....still empty!
Can anyone give some advice cuase im stuck with it cause of the law in ireland...buyer beware (buyer be scewed!!). Is the fuel pump gone??

Any advice will be greatly appreciated!!

is your fuel line blocked going back to the tank? if so give a airline a blast down it

You have to prime the filter once you've placed it back onto the housing, other wise the I.P will take a coons age to drag fuel through.

Choked fuel tank breather? Try it with the fuel cap off, see what happens.

If you've changed the filter, fill it with ATF or Redex. And yes, it has the same effect as priming it with the pump.

if you take the pipe off of the filter that goes to the pump and prime the filter till fuel comes out the pipe.Then on top of the fuel pump is a 14mm or 17mm nut undo that a bit and then prime the filter again till fuel comes out of that and the tighten back up.Then try starting the truck and if that don't work then you'll also need to crack the lines to the injectors and crank over till fuel comes out fast the retighten and try starting the truck.If non of this don't work i aint got a clue.

Only if there is fuel all the way to the filter head. It doesn't sound as if there was as the filter would not have emptied if so. I'd think it's either vacuum locking, (as you suggested), or has a leak on one of the fuel hoses.

so a blow with a air line might work then matt as i was thinking it was like skull when it was dying a couple of months back n ez had to put airline down also so aint there something like if you take the fuel filler cap off n it gushes its a blockage?

Popping the airline on will generally work if it's due to a blockage. Might only be a temporary fix, however. Whatever is causing the blockage might end up back in there again, so best to clean it out thoroughly if that sorts it temporarily.

Sucking air in when you take the cap off is usually due to blocked breathers. Fuel is pulled out of the tank whilst running, but air can't get in. Hence, you end up with the vacuum lock, and that inrush of air to the tank when you remove the cap. Fuel line blockage will just lead to fuel starvation from the tank onwards towards the engine.
