Hi I Bought My First Surf At Weekend.it Has Started Overheating As I Was On My Way Home. I Checked And It And It Seemed To Be Out Of Colant So I Topped It Up With Water. The Steam Roars Out Of Exspansion Tank And Water Is Rusty Colored. The Temp Gauge Has Never Seemed Right To Me As It Would Jump Form Half Way To Cold Position When Driving But Never To Red, Until Tonight.

The Heaters Are Constantly Cold But It Does Seem To Drive Ok. Ive Never Had One Before So Im Unsure If The Way It Drives Is Normal

Any Help On What Problem Might Be And If Anyone Could Recommend Place In Glasgow That Could Look A It Would Be Great Many Thanks Graeme

Did you buy it private or from a dealer?

I'll pass on the advice I got from members on this site, which so far has worked for me. Erratic temperatures generally indicate thermostat problems / rad cap so change those and then burp the cooling system to get rid of any airlocks. You will find a thread on here on how to do that if you don't know. As Sancho asks, if you bought from a dealer, take it straight back and tell him to sort it, as the more serious issue could possibly be the head, so you may want to get a garage to test for combustion gasses in the coolant.

Good luck, hope it goes ok for you.

Right, now I'm not trying to go to bed.....

The erratic reading on the temperature gauge is caused by air in the cooling system. It shows the real temperature when water goes past the sensor then drops when air goes past.

You need to completely drain and flush the cooling system, then replace the water with proper coolant. You should replace the thermostat and radiator cap at the same time. Once you've filled it back up again, you need to burp the cooling system properly, check it the next day, top it up if needed and check it every day for a week then once a week for ever more.

If it keeps throwing the coolant out, you've probably got a head problem. Having the coolant checked for combustion gases will tell you.

If you bought it from a dealer, ignore all of the above. Take it back and tell them to fix it.

          Overheating

Hi And Thanks For Your Feedback. I Bought The Hilux Private From A Lady For £550.00. I Have Bled The System But Need To Wait Till Weekend To Change Thermo And Cap.

There Also Apeared To Be Two Pipes In The Wrong Position. It Seemed To Be The Flow And Return For The Heater Matrix Just At Back Of Engine Bay Ging Into The Car. I Changed Them Around And I Got Hot Heaters But A Lot Of Water Poring Into The Footwell. I Think This Means The Heater Matrix Is Gone.

I Know That To Be A Big Job Is It Too Much To Do? And Exspensive?

I Have Now Put Pipes Back Into Previous Position As It Allows The Water To Circulate.

I Am Also Looking To Raise The Hilux With Bigger Tyres And A Suspension Lift. Size Of Tyres Are Currently 265 70 15 What Is The Biggest I Could Put On These Wheels? And A Lift That Wouldnt Be A Lot Of Hassle With Brake Pipes Many Thanks Graeme
