  • Diesel Injectors Help please

Hi, Just bought my first surf, a 91 ssrx auto 2.4td l-te.

She has a blown head gasket on no3 cyl.

The heads good and im in the process of cleaning it all up ready to put back together.

The problem is i stripped the injectors down and boy did they need cleaning but the injector on no3 is different to the other three.

The injector spring sits further inside the body by about 2mm and thus im thinking would effect the fuel delivery in relation to the others.

Its like its missing a spacer or something from inside the body yet the others have no space.

The others are solid at the point where the spring contacts the body yet the odd one has a little dimple in the surface.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

    Regards Andy

First off, welcome to the nut house!

I'd be surprised if a 2.4 turbo Surf blew a head gasket and didn't crack the head, are you 100% sure the head is OK?

If you've stripped the injectors, you need to get them rebuilt by an injector specialist.

Search the forum for further info.

Lastly, beware the squirrel (Apparently German's can't say squirrel, but I've never actually asked one to try it... Yet!)
Do you know that, with a 50 character limit, it's

Hi Andy and welcome to the nuthouse

As Albannach said your problem is more likely to be the head rather than the head gasket - your best bet is to contact our esteemed Stevo

          More bad news

Well i did fear the head was cracked and after reading your posts i looked a little closer and sure enough a small crack in the combustion surface of cyl 3 showed itself.

So a new head it is, have been qouted £185 for a bare head with all gaskets to do the job or £320 for a complete head but less all the gaskets and water pump. (ebay).

Spoke to the guy and he sounds a good chap.

Can anyone recomend a source for a head for a better price or reason?

The only problem thats bugging me now is the diesel injectors, yes they are technical but its not rocket science.

Im looking about for a replacment injector or a set of so at least if i do send them to someone they are all the same to start with.

Has anyone got any old injectors kicking about?

          Regards Andy

Well for the head stevo is deffo ur man..
Don't fall for the cheaper e-bay heads because it will just go again as a few of them are not brill quality.
But Stevo's heads are the best and at least u know where it came from..

Diesel bob in preston will refurb ur injectors for about £33 each they are like new then..
I hav got an injector here of a 2.4 from 93 but also might need a refurb I am not sure.

Also there is a company called Hooton 4x4 I know he is still breaking a surf give him a call if u wanted a few not refurbished injectors I am sure he will send them out.. or I can pick them up as they are not far from me and send them off for u.

If u send Bob urs tho he will do them and send them back to u like new...
One day at the time I guess..

              Hi

The same thing happened to me regards the injectors. My number 1 was odd from the rest and was making a nasty diesel knock. I bought three from a guy on ebay and replaced the number 1 injector only. Worked just fine. I know you are supposed to have a matched set but when you have one that is so obviously wrong a genuine injector can't be any worse. Of course this is only my opinion. If you'd like one let me know.

All the best with the head rebuild.

                Surfs coming along

Well its been a few weeks since i got the head off and found the crack. The new heads arrived and im just waiting for a cam belt and a few odds n sods before getting my hands dirty.

This is really a nice little motor, im impressed, ive never driven it as i bought it as a non runner but i get the feeling they are nice to drive.

I drove a LWB Shogun yesterday, YUK!!! it was aweful. The surf is far better inside. I will let you know what it drives like soon.

Still need an injector from somewhere, help someone....pls.....

The Bio-Diesel kit is almost finished too, so cheap motoring is on the horizon soon i hope.

I might just have discovered something really funky with the interior, but its a secret at the mo, will tell you all if it works out.

                Cheers Andy

A few questions about my head build?

Spent the afternoon in the workshop lapping the valves into the new head and struggleing with the crank bolt. Can anyone give me some pointers on the following?

                      1. Location of locking pin hole or method of locking the crank with the head off so that i can get the front pully bolt off.

                      2. Method of setting the valve clearences. I have the measurements but dont understand the process. Im guessing each valve is checked with a feeler gauge between the cam lobe and shim face on the tappet with the cam at a specific point, its this measurement i dont have, can anyone help?

Apart from the above my surf is going well and should be running very soon.

                      Regards Andy

                              Got the email

                              Hi Mate,

Top Man got the injector, perfect match for the other three. The odd one must of had a lazy spring.

Guess its worth all surf owners checking their injectors out.

The fuel cap however wont fit as the one you sent is a threded type and i need a bayonet type but no worrys, send if you have one if not i will ask about.

Got my new seats today, awesome, got a set of Cosworth Recaros in light grey and a set of MG Recaros in new fresh leather, green centres and grey outers.

Its been a hard choice on which to use, but as im a grubby mechanic the brand new leather ones seem a waiste so i might save them or sell them on.

                              Thanks again
