hi,
I have an auto 2.4 td.
its very smokey on start up for about 10 seconds or so.it also chugs abit until its cleared(feels like its flooded).
Theres hardly any smoke whilst driving, unless i boot it in which case a small amount comes out.

what would you recommend to check first?

Sounds like your first stop is check all the glow plugs are working OK, or at all.

What I did Was

Renew the Diesel pump filter, this is the one under the hand pump...was doing just what yours is now...replacement cost me £9 and its running like its never run before...no smoke and not runnung now like its firing on 3 plugs when it starts first thing in a morning.

A bit of a baller bleeding the sytem but worth the effort.
