  • Plooms of bluey white smoke

As the title says i am getting plooms of bluey white smoke coming out of the exhaust and the engine is running rough between 2000 & 3500 rpm, i've always had smoke when starting from cold but a quick blast on the accelorator and its all gone.

The oil is fine (just been changed) and the water is fine (no loss or no oil in it), the only other thing different is the exhaust is blowing from just after the turbo.

Could this be fuel starvation or a blocked injector, would this cause the smoke??

Did you fill it up to the 'full' mark on the dipstick? I've found that mine burns oil like crazy (with lots of blue-white smoke) until it's down to about 3/4

Hmmmmm thats a good question, actually no i didn't i only put 5lts in and a new filter (should be 6lts)this took it to just over the lower limit.

There is a method to my madness, the truck hadn't had an oil change for quite a while (not me, previouse owner) so i only put 1 full tub of oil in and i'm going to change the oil again in about a week (the oil was thick and black) and is black again even with the new oil, so i thought run it for 2 weeks then replace the oil and filter, i might get it a bit cleaner if i change it sooner, rather than leaving it another 6 months with dirty oil in.

Would this effect the engine causing it to run rough??

Air and Oil filters replaced about a month ago, the only thing i can say which may effect the fuel filter is i've just started to run veggie oil for the last 2 weeks, only about 15% but this could have cleaned out the tank and lines into the filter, can it be cleaned, as a temporary measure just to proove it, one way or another?

Ill do that tomorrow, when its not as cold and wet, would fuel starvation cause the smoke, i know it will make it run like a bag of spanners, its just the smoke that is puzzling me.

The veggie oil will be cleaning all the crud out of your fuel system too, maybe that's a factor?
Do you know that, with a 50 character limit, it's

Yes the crud will block the filter, thus causing a fuel starvation but why the smoke?

Yes water will definaterly give white smoke or steam should i say, but unless i've blown a gasket or head then it shouldn't be steam and the water has not dropped since i've had it.

I also fitted new glow plugs 2 months ago to try and get rid of the white smoke on start up, but im thinking that this is just condensation within the exhaust when left for a period of time, ill know better in the summer, if we have one this year!!!

yep, me too, I could have hired my truck out as a smoke screen generator for the army!

took about a week to clear, which surprised (and concerned) me.

If the engine is running lean, you'll get white smoke. If it's running rich, you'll get black smoke. If the timing's out, you can get either, depending what way it's out.

If it's water vapour, it'll condense on a cold surface. So nip round the back with a piece of glass or something and put it in the path of the exhaust gas.

                            It's not steam!

Done the steam test and its not steam, am i right in thinking that diesel fuel starvation will cause the turbo to overheat, i know this is the case with petrol cars as i had a similar problem on a Saab 900 turbo, but without the smoke
