  • Turning but not starting

    Hi everyone,

I am in southwales and have a big problem.

My father in law took my surf to cirencester to fetch a diesel tank, when he was a mile away the engine overheated and blow the top pipe off the rad. he clipped the pipe back on, topped up the water with boiling kettle water then went that last mile. when he got to the garage that was selling the diesel tank, the machanic told him to turn off the engine immeadiately. The rad was cold and the engine overheated, the mechanic removed the themostat, my father in law got a lift back with someone else and left the truck there.

A few months later the mechanic called and said that the engine was free (not siezed) but he had no time to look closer at it. My father in law then arranged for the truck to be brought back by Lanes recovery.

Following the instructions from the mechanic i have drained the oil and water and replaced the oil, i have not refilled the water yet. the mechanic said to try starting the engine without water just to see if it would start, tried it with no luck.

I put a fuel conditioner in the tank to take care of any water and debris that may have been in there but the diesel has a funny white spirity smell to it. I have tried starting with a can of diesel connected to the filter so that the tank was not used but still no starting.

I really need help with this. I thought that it must be the head but after reading some of the threads i came to the conclusion that the engine should still start even with the head cracked.

It's a H reg 2.4 TD. I would be very grateful of any help.

    Thanks

Some more info that might help:

    - Is the engine turning over faster than you'd expect (lack of compression)?
    - Are you getting fuel smells down the exhaust (if not, fuel pump, injectors or ECU)?

I'd be tempted to disconnect one of the injector lines and stick a bag over it, then turn the engine over a bit. Should be fuel coming out -- not a huge amount, but I'd guess around 0.03ml per injection would be a minimum to start.

sounds like its lost compression, fooked ,could try easy start then if it goes it will give you an idea as to what condition the engines in

        Not faster

        Hi,

the engine turns over just like it did before, no faster at all. I will check the injectors tomorrow.

        Thanks

Just to cover bases, here's some more simple things to check:

          - Glow plug fuse OK;
          - Nothing blocking the air-ways (try disconnecting the air hose to the turbo, make sure turbo turns -- when cold of course!).
          - Fuel filter primed (primer pump should be difficult to operate).

Might also try leaving the batteries disconnected for 24 hours -- which should reset the ECU.

By the sounds of it, I'm still guessing you've got a knackered fuel pump.

            started and running

            Hi guys,

Thanks for all the help, it seems that there is a problem with the fuel in the tank. connected a pipe from a 5 gallon drum to the filter and up she roared, even tried a diesel conditioner but still the fuel in the tank smells of white spirit.

            Thanks again.
