eventually decided to remove head to check for dreaded cracks! got timing belt cover off and the belt has torn on the edge nearest the motor.it is like a 3mm ribbon all along. the cog to the left and below camshaft is being pulled off by the belt......QUESTION is there any chance that this could have caused the billowing white smoke on stat up and why'll running. I have not been able to start it at all lately, it fires now and again (like an old cement mixer) but will not catch! When it last started there was no bad noises just ran rough. Timing (timing belt) maybe. Your opinions will be gratefully received..............Thanks for the offer and advise. A mechanic mate comin around tomorrow to have a look. Thats the Idler. The bolts will snap if the bearing seizes. Sounds like it was well overdue for a belt change which should include the Idler,Tensioner and the Crank and Cam seals. You could replace these and then restart the engine but I think you will find that you will have other engine damage which can be as little as a bent valve or two or a whole lot worse.

snapped idler bolt removal.
can the snapped idler bolt be removed in situ or does head need to come off. Bought surf last july and seller told me timing belt was 6 months old.Went to south of france in july. Think i'm lucky belt didn't go over there. The moral of this story is..Don't trust a polish surf seller from reading! I'm unemployed at mo so am looking at cheapest way to get up and running. Not using a garage ..just me my Mechanic friend and this excellent web site..Cheers Nev. What should I do.STEVIE J

Yes it can be removed in vehicle. It's connected to the block and not the head. You will probably need to remove the radiator to allow room. If any of the bolt is protruding from the block then try some vice grips or get someone to tack weld another small bolt to it and then unscrew. If not then you will need to carefully drill centre of bolt and then use a screw extractor.

Taking the head off won't help, but its still a ba$tard to get to.
If you get the bolt out, check the broken bit hasn't rounded out the hole in the oil pump housing, if its worn the bolt will be able to flex and may break again. I've fixed them in the past with liquid metal round the new bolt, oil the bolt (to stop the bolt sticking) and let it set, to rebuild the hole, its not great, but has worked successfully and saved lots of effort changing the oil pump cover.4x4toys.co.uk - Keeping you on and off the road...

snapped idler bolt
at long last i,ve got me a job got new belt,tensioner and idler pulley. the bolt for the pulley has snapped where the thread starts. where can i get a sturdy bolt extractor from. got a a set from machinemart but they are to flimsy ! i,ve drilled a 6mm hole in bolt. one suggestion i had from one of you good people was to use liquid metal. would this be a reasonable alternative? your thoughts and obvious graeter knowledge would be appreciated.STEVIE J

The liquid metal is only to repair the hole if its rounded.
Go to a local motor factors and check if they have extractors - you'll be able to handle them to see if they are worth the money.
