dumbass question - fuel pumps

on the surfs there's a water feed to/from the fuel pump. does this just heat the fuel before it gets to the injectors? i'll wait for replies before i tell you what i done today and why...iotc award coming up maybe?!?!?

hi i think you have an ealry surf that has a mech pump, theses pipes are for the cold start fast idle, hope this helps

the thing is, on the 1st gen the heaters were cr@p so having looked at the entire coolant system, its obvious that since the new head was done the thing hasn't been properly flushed through and drained yearly by last owner. so took all hoses off, turbo ones could be saved but heater ones were knackered.

we threw out the rear heater ones altogether coz it don't get cold enough to have 2 heaters in a truck and i couldn't be ar5ed TBH. then noticed these ones to the pump, and then checked on the 2nd gen and its got them too.

trouble is on the 1st gen they're harder to get to to remove from pump end and they were so solid blocked i couldn't even get them to 'crunch' like the heater ones. so i disconnected them and bypassed the lot. i assumed they would just be to heat the fuel and not to cool a pump.

anyway, i am a dumbass so just wanted to check i'm not going to kill anything on the surf. coz now it seems much better, the cooling system is all clean now and the heater blows a goodun.

but will i encounter any probs by doing what i done?

If they're for the idle control, then since they're gone, you should get permanent fast idle and enriched mixture.

sitting same as before. about 650ish rpm. but since the hoses to the thing were so clogged it wouldn't make much if any difference anyway, would it? i don't know - see previous statement on being a dumbass!

The hoses connect to some sort of wax pellet mechanism. This senses engine temp and adjusts fuel supply. Without it, I assume it will always run rich because it will not adjust the fuel supply.

Cold Start Thingie

I am sure that all this part does is to bring up the idle when the unit senses the ingine is cold.
On a diesel you will know when there is extra fuel going in because the engine speed will rise, unlike a petrol which the speed of the engine is not governer controlled.
The petrol engine will run at about the same speed or slower and unevenly but consume more fuel and have a slightly black exhaust, but someone will possibly have other ideas or thoughts on this.

cheers for the help gents. its made no difference to idle speed and to get to the hoses to actually change is a PITA so i'll leave it how it is.

just taken my pump off the breaker and the water feeds are solid with crud, it never made a difference to my engine, so i think your be ok
