  • Hi Speed Wobbly Steering!

Hi everyone.I was zoomin along the motorway yesterday, doing about 60 mph, when the steering wheel started to wobble slighty and quite fast left to right.Have i got a loose steering wheel,or is it more a case of getting the wheels tracked/balanced correctly at a garage? My monster truck is a 1991 2.4 with raised wheels and large bf goodrich tyres.
Any advice again is greatly appreciated.
I'll get a picture of my surf up soon when i have a spare minute!
    Thanks,
    Clive.

Raised wheels eh? Hover car is it?

Anyway, back to the point, sounds like when the steering idler on mine was worn out. Is there much play in the steering when you're parked up?

      Re;Wobbly steering

Hi.It has a wooden and chrome type steering wheel fittted, not the original. It has only recently been wobbling! There is some play in the wheel when parking. Is it worth taking it to a tracking specialist or just straight to the garage to sort the steering idler thing out?
      Thanks,
      Clive.

Check your last MOT to see if there were any advisories on wear to the steering idler. A garage can check its condition in five minutes if you can't get to it yourself. Failing that, get the balancing and tracking done, but there's no point if you've got a wobbly idler.

I suppose you could have lost a balancing weight off a wheel but I would check the idler first.

It is unlikely to be the steering wheel. Give it a bit of a shake and make sure it's bolted on properly I suppose.

            wobbly steering

I had a similar problem with mine which lasted for three years. I did all the usual things like tracking and balancing but the truck always pulled to the left and wobbled at anything over 55. It wasnt until I fitted the body lift kit that it stopped. I can now drive in a straight line and reach 60mph completely wobble free.

Recon your right .I had the same thing hit 55mph and the steering wheel would wobble left and right...year later new set of front tyres ..no wobble

One other thing that can cause a wobble occasionally - did you happen to be in the truck lane and catch the indents from the lorries ?
