  • Binding Breaks or Rear Differential

    Hi everyone.

My 93 2.4td Surf is making a rubbing sound which seems to be coming from the rear somewhere.

My first thoughts where "it's the rear drum break binding". So I jacked up and placed on stands... the left hand drum came off quite easily and all inside seemed to be in order. Problems arose when trying to remove the right hand side drum. It just won't budge.

So it sounds like there must be a breaking issue there, or is there more.

Has anyone else had this sort of trouble before and if so how did you get it sorted?

Also, while I'm quite sure it's a binding drum (perhaps the hand break is set too tight) I wondered if it could be the rear diff. How would you go about checking a rear diff?

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated

      Ditto Marky's comment

Diffs tend to run fine unless you get contaminants in the oil. Check the diff fluid (there's a test-plug on the half-way up the backside of the 'bulb').
If there was a problem, it wouldn't be a rubbing noise.
