    hello
i just bought a 2.4td hi lux surf import. 92 reg. done 55,000 miles. i bought the truck from a garage. it has had a new head and clutch and gaskets. its in good condition otherwise apart from the fact it chucks out a load a grey blue smoke when first started and whilst its cold. once its warmed up its fine. i have only done a thousand miles in it but doesnt seem to have used any water. it has used a little oil but less than a litre. should i take the surf back to the garage or is it an easy fix? thanx for any help

What oil are you using? I put some fully synthetic in mine by accident and got some blueish smoke. you wanna go for a semi-synthetic or plain old mineral oil.
it never rain it pours! glad I got the 4X4

Is this grey-blue smoke really sickley sweet smelling, if so it could be partially burnt diesel, normally caused by faulty glow plugs. Also if it has had a new heat it could have had some new glow plugs in, sometimes they like more time to warm up.

the 2.4 should have a bleeper that comes on after about 20 seconds if the engine has not been started. what I do is turn on the ignition, glow plug light goes out almost immediatly (bad spelling!) then after about 20 seconds the bleeper starts, then I crank the engine over. A bit complex I know but works for me

Oh and welcome by the way

Mine still does this (EGR modded & new Glow-plugs) -- can be glow plugs, but can also be old injectors (they have a usable life-span of up to 80'000 miles).
