  • Prop Shaft Probs

    hi all.
I've got a 1st gen 2.4 td manual surf but recently it has started shaking when i am going along. I've had a look and the rear lower Universal Joint (U.J) has busted on the prop shaft, i know i can buy a new U.J but i also need a lower U.J casing as mine is now cracked. does anybody know if i can get that part on its own or do i need a whole new prop shaft and how much should a 2nd hand complete prop be roughly?
    many thanks
    Will

    is this your surf?

If so it's a 2nd gen. And there's a few breaking on here so might be able to find what you're after from someone on here.

      Hi,
I`m sure somebody else will help with sourcing the individual parts but there is also the option of a re-build at a prop.shaft specialist who will make sure it`s balanced, paint it etc. The cheapest will be a straight second-hand one but try and find one that`s been greased! Dont use it too much like it is as not good for bearings in diff.

hi there can you recomend a prop shaft specialist. i have tacken the rear prop shaft off and running it i 4 wheel drive, is that not a good idea then?

I dont know any rebuild specailists but I would search for (drive-shaft, propshaft rebuilders).
I think it`s bad to drive it with the front wheels only as it`s not designed to be and I think it would still place a strain on the front drive-train and suffer, but to a lessor extent (than 4wd on tarmac) from axle-wind-up. I was referring to the driving the surf with a "vibrating" rear-prop prematurely placing wear on rear axle components.
              cheers,
              chris

You should be fine driving in 4wd with the rear prop removed, axle wind up is when bits of the drivetrain get unduly stressed by driving in 4wd on tarmac on a drivetrain with no cetre diff. Happens because the rear wheels would take a shorter route round corners/bends than the front wheels. On loose surfaces the tyres slip a bit to relieve the stress, on dry tarmac they can't slip so something has to give.

Having the rear prop removed it can't happen.

                          Hi all, good news.
Took it to a specialist garage and they replaced the U.V joint and housing, serviced the whole prop (greased, realigned properly e.t.c), they did it on the spot within half an hour and the best bit, it came to a grand total of £62.
They recon the last person who worked on it put it back on slightley out of line causing it to wear wrongly.
Anyway it’s back on now and all is well, runs so smoothly.
                          Thank you all!!!
