Cold start problem

I am having a cold start issue with my 2LTE. I have changed the glow plugs and checked the fuses and all seems fine. The problem seems to be the cold. It will not start after sitting over night in below freezing temps(even with a circ heater and battery blanket). I can get it to run but it needs a warm garage and a lot of encouragement. Very tough to get fuel to the injectors. Once it starts it is fine and runs great. I thick it is the injector pump but want to be certain due to the high price of replacing it. The pump shows no sign of leaks.

Any ideas?

have you tried pumping the primer on top of the fuel filter as it sounds like the fuel draining back so get somebody to turn the engine over while you pump the primer i hope this is of some help

In Canada... pretty damn cold.
For a quick fix, you might try adding a little petrol (gasolene) to the diesel. 10% absolute max, probably more like 5%.

Yup, that's damn cold. Petrol goes off bang really easy, and freezes at around -80degC (top of my head, may be wrong) -- a little bit in weather that cold will probably help the engine a bit.

Start off with a 5% mix, and if that doesn't help at all, stop and find another cause. a 10% mix in -26C weather should still be okay.
I've heard of Icelanders using upto 25%, but that's extreme.

I did use a bio diesel mix in the summer, but not now.

Injector Pump Question

I believe that I have narrowed the problem down to the injector pump. I would like your thoughts on what the problem would be with a pump that supplies no fuel on cold (below freezing) startup but once started runs fine.

Another question is how much should I be paying for a new injector pump. I can get a brand new pump for $1750(CND/US).

Check the part no. req'd, but it should be 22100-5B-300. you can get this pump from Toyota for about $600 US, or you can get it from australia for $300 AU,

Apart from a faulty pump, both vacuum system and a cracked fuel line can cause that.
An old (clogged) fuel filter can cause this kind of problem too.

Well worth getting it checked by a registerd diesel injection specialist before spending out on expensive new parts, Fuel pumps rarely fail to the point of needing replacement.

Yes I found some information on what is going on using the diagnostic plugs. The code is 7 which I believe is Throttle positions sensor. I also found out that the ECU can be bypassed by connecting the Fp and B+ terminals on the diagnostic plug. I have not tried it yet (-20c outside).

Any one have any ideas on how I go about checking the Throttle position sensor?

Check it's not just dirty connections at the TPS, it'll be working with milli volts so even a very small bit of extra resistance can make a big difference.

Taking the connector on and off a few times will clean it.

Sometimes the TPS can get dislodged, so check that it's still where it should be.
