My 2.4 surf is kicking out a lot of black smoke when accelerating I have renewed the air filter and injectors, it’s just done over 200k, but this has not cured the problem
Could this be the turbo at fault?

Is this when cold, or always?

You say you've renewed the injectors... so you mean you replaced them?
Did you change the fuel filter?

Do you run regular Diesel?

have you disconnected the egr valve and blocked off the pipe do a search for egr and the instruction on how to do it will be there.

I fitted new injectors (thanks diesel bob) replaced the fuel filter and run regular diesel. I have disconnected the egr valve but not fitted a blanking plate, a job for tomorrow I think

In that case, you could also check for:

Over-filled with oil (should be 3/4 full, as marked on dip-stick);
Worn valve sleeves;

But the turbo is a pretty good bet. Sorry.
You can pick-up trade in reconditioned ones for £200 (I think diesel bob would do that).
