hilux keeps getting stuck in park

Hi we have recently bought a Hilux Surf ssr-x 2.4, 1992 - it keeps getting stuck in park!!
Seems to be related to the 4x4 stick??
Any advice would be really appreciated as we're new to all this!!

Make sure the 4x4 lever is pushed fully forward.

Fully backward for normal driving!

Also, there is a solenoid that locks the transmission lever in Park until you press the brake pedal. You should be able to hear a little "thunk" noise when you press the brake in park. If that's stuck or dead, you can use the little red button to get out of park.
