noise from engine bay identified as harmonic balancer becoming unbonded
    part ordered

having read several postings i am not sure whether the rad has to be
removed. Is it possible to remove and replace pulleys without removing rad.
would it be a good idea to replace cambelt only replaced 7200 kms ago.

any help and advice welcome new'ish to surfs

Hi, on my 2nd gen I didn't need to remove the rad ( even though the manual said you do) but you will need to use a propper pulley puller,

    http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/pr...tomotive-tools

You will also need to lock the crank in position to undo the crank pulley nut, do this with a flat bar fittied inbetween two 8mm threaded rods screwed into the holes in the crank pulley.

Do not try to wedge the bar and then crank the engine ( as some have suggested) as you may end up with he bar embedded in the roof of your garage, or your face.

You'll need to remove all the drive belts, but this isn't too bad of a job, just a bit fiddley.

You'll also need a breaker bar to get the leverage you need.

Whole job took me about 2 hours, and I'm a novice .

The engine crank method works fine. 19mm socket and T bar, turn the engine by hand until the end of the bar is touching the chassis next to the power steering pump, and just a quick flick of the ignition key and hey presto, one loose bolt!

I would remove the rad as there is loads more room to play with and it saves damaging the rad fins. Don't forget to plug the ends of the transmission cooler hoses when removing them from the bottom of the rad, as there will be ATF all over the floor!

I used the BFH method. (19mm socket on ratchet and big F****** hammer!).

It is easier with the rad out. But not essential

Oh, and BTW, I would invest in a torque wrench too, as all the bits yo take off need to be the correct torque, and seriously expensive damage can occur if your crank pulley comes off when you're driving.
