my 2.4 has , over the last 2 days been a bit weird.the expansion tank was empty, but i did watch some coolant evaporate away.
i topped it up(a bit to much) and today its nearly full.i managed to get about a quarter of a cup of water in to the engine via the rad cap opening.does this sound like rad cap/thermostat needs replacing.it is to my knowledge a year or more old.the rad was replaced about 3 mths ago,and has not used any coolant since.it also has a new head(toyota) fitted about 2 years ago and has been fine.i cant see a leak anywhere
so am thinking it is either/or rad cap and/or tstat
    Non intercooled nothing.

yes mate, lowered by ( i think) 50 mm.it is lower than the thermostat housing....................... .........see where you are coming from richard.even though we were as careful as possible,we did jiggle it about quite a bit,and do you reckon we may have introduced a bit of air/released maybe an existing minor air lock.i would expect the expansion tank to be "fuller" when its hot.its as thought he coolant in the tank couldnt get back into the system when it cooled down

that's also a possibility, if the pipe from the rad cap to the expansion tank is perished or leaking, then the pressure will still push coolant to the expansion tank when the engines hot, but as it cools it will draw air through the leak in the pipe rather than coolant back from the tank.

        Leaving now btw...

Could be the rad cap that is not working correctly I had a situation where the expansion bottle filled up but would not return the water to the system. it turned out that the return holes in the cap were blocked with gunge

                Mornin'

As nero said, but also check the hose clips on the bottom rad hose are tight too.
Maybe it's something to do with the expansion bottle being higher now thats released an air-lock, who knows?

I would replace the cap and stat anyway if they're a year old.
Your engine should be running cooler now you had a body lift, as the air can get around it and the transmission better, plus you've got no air-con rad either, so the sump should be getting a good airing too.

it does seem to run cooler(just slightly under half a guage as opposed to exactly half a guage before),it doesn't seem so warm either when i lift the bonnet after it has run.all thehose clips are fine,im thinking, new cap and stat required coupled with movement of the rad,has given the old girl a slight case of indigestion
