    Okay all,

Still lumpy, still 'missing' / 'spitting', still cammy ! Slightly quicker than before, but I put that down to the ecu settling down. SO......

Its sleeves up time. Tomorrow I'm picking up my other set of injectors to swap them on Saturday.

If this is no better, what do I look for to check the timming ? What lines up with what ? (Pictures would be nice)

Can a fuel pump be put in 'out of time' by 180degrees (like the old petrol engine exhaust / inlet valve scenario?)

I guess its a really long job to check.. so I may be some time !

Hi Jim, ive just been building this engine back up today, its not a surf buts its diesel and it will give you the general idea, lucky i hadnt put the timing cover back on, the timing marks can be seen clearly so you know what to look for, line the bottom (crank) up first, the pump and cam should then line up with the marks on the casing

Thanks Steve... Exactly what I was looking for.

        Three things,
        1. On Pete's picture the fuel pump looks to be a tooth(ish) out... is this camera angle or just me...or is it supposed to be !??

        2. The Pump itself is on slide bolt holes (elongated holes) Where does one set the pump / timing up to with relation to the holes? Top, Bottom, middle?

        3. Which way is advance / retard when looking at this picture ?

          1. It's just the camera angle.

          2. Not sure if you should really mess about with moving the pump. Just get the timing marks spot on and it should be OK unless it has been moved.

          3. Advance is to the right (turn cogs anticlockwise to advance) as the engine rotates clockwise (I think or rather I am pretty sure).

When setting the timing make sure that you have the tensioner slackened off. Also you may find that you need to set all the cogs one cog retarded because of spring tension and compression. Mind you it might also be easier to do if you take out the injectors or glow plugs to release the compression. engine will be easier to turn as well.

          Good luck

          Cheers

a diesel pump has a nut on the side, when removed a special tool is inserted which fits into a hole inside the pump, to time the pump to the engine

              pump adjustment

Jim the Diesel pump is marked by the outer e-longated hole ( 2 lines meet, one on the pump and one on the pump housing ) As previously posted you cannot lock up the pump if you move it on the slots because the support bracket at the back of the pump do's not have an e-longated slot. Check and see if your timing marks line up if not take a pic and we will try and advise.
              Cheers Steve.

                          Sorry m8,

The best I can give you on injector spec is..... 2nd hand 1993, 2.4td efi injectors out of my blown engine - had them 'in stock' so to speak !

I expect them to go bad, as they were starting to rust when I got them back for the muppets who fitted my engine

At least I know I can do it again inside 2 hours

Ignore my post on other thread

Aha! So it was the injectors?

Am I correct in assuming that it should be possible to buy new ones from somewhere, or get the old ones cleaned, and that I may recover some of the lost 'get up and go'. It really does not want to rev past 3500, and its getting a bit boring!

                            Cheers

You can get them from Roughtrax or Toyota, or any decent Diesel engine specialist.

Or you could get your's reconditioned by a Diesel specialist.

                              Cheers
