  • High end coolant for 2.4

I just ordered my 1992 Land Cruiser Prado from Japan with the 2.4 engine and the dreaded cracked head problem(wish me luck).I'm going to completely change the coolant to a product from EVANS COOLING SYSTEMS you can check them out online(couldn't get the link to work)just Google it. Their coolant has a really high boil point and I believe this will solve the issues.Any thoughts?"

May not be worth spending the extra cos if the temp has a higher boil point it can still reach temps that can crack the head, i would just watch thermostat and rad cap, and never use radweld, and give the whole system a ruddy good flush before you start

Waste of money. Nothing will prevent a cracked head if it overheats through such problems as coolant loss. The normal Toyota coolant or quality aftermarket is all you need. Just don't mix different types as this will create major problems.

Thanks guys, this is a great forum for a guy getting his 2.4 powered vehicle in a month or so.If it's fine when it arrives and I don't use it hard(loaded up with gear and people and driving in the mountains)then I'm confident I'm getting a nice ride. Will still probably go with the coolant idea, can't hurt,I hope....lol.

But that's what it was desiegned and built to do, that's what I use mine for, as do many on various forums, go on, get it loaded and get into the mountains, you know you want to

Heads do not crack at 264 deg F (boiling point of coolant) or even 300 or 400 deg F, they crack at much higher temperatures than that.
The reason your head cracks when you overheat is because steam forms in your coolant passages around the combustion chambers. The steam essentially vapour locks in your head and doesn't move. Steam has virtually zero heat absorption ability which causes your head to rapidly approach your exhaust gas temperature. That is what cracks your head.
Going to a coolant with a higher boiling temperature eliminates the possibility of having steam form, which essentially eliminates the possibility of cracking your head (unless you have air pockets - which do essentially the same thing as steam).
Your engine normally runs at around 200 deg F, with a water based coolant you have basiclly a 64 deg window for the engine to operate in (assuming your cooling system is in top shape) before you run into problems. Going to a coolant that has a higher boiling point, you have in fact increased the effective window of operation before you run into major problems.
The problems with the 2L engines all stem back to a poor head design - thinwall castings, not enough coolant passages and poor steam venting.

Hi Chris, I'm in Thanet ( unfortunately) and there aren't any tracks around here, but as Nero says, there are quite a few that he knows and travels on a fairly regular basis.

Get out with Nero one weekend, and you'll have a good day out.

I'm off to the Wales run on the 26th with a bunch of the guys and gals, to do Strata Florida and Sarn Helen, with a bit of camping thrown in for good measure.
