  • What do I need to look out for

    Hi Folks,
Well the time has finally come for me to get myself a surf 2.4 td, I got all the dosh and I'm ready to start looking at motors.
I have been doing some research on surfs and I see a lot of people mention problems with timing belts and heads so I was just wondering if someone could point me in the right direction on what to look out for mechanically. I'm on a tight budget so the last thing I want to do is buy a duffer !! I suppose if I found one at the right price I maybe able to afford to get the head replaced as a precautionary measure, but I'm not sure on the costs.
If someone could enlighten me it would be much appreciated.

Where to start, no guarentee's on the head front, unless you get paperwork and receipts to say its had a NEW head fitted. Recon/stitched head is no good it was a design fault so it will go again if its not new.
Make sure the warranty covers the head for at least a year, it can take that long for them to go. That said there are lots of 2.4 owners who have had no problems.
Cost of new head is around £595 + VAT + gaskets and stretch bolts, then add the labour on top unless you can do it yourself.
You could always try to knock the dealer etc down the price of the head so you then have it budgeted for if it does go.
Shop around there are plenty of places that do them now, drop andy and hilux (Bob) a PM, both on this forum, see what they have in stock.
