  • Diesel Fuel Tank Leaking-Help!!!

Hi folks.Hope u are all well and groovy. My 2.4 1991 diesel auto Surf has been running wonderfully well since i last visited.Only needed 2 drive belts changed and a new battery since i bought it.Today i went to fill up the fuel tank, and it started leaking out of the bottom of the tank, dripping onto the rear wheel axel/chassis,and all over the floor! This happened a few months ago, when i filled it up to almost a full tank,it was leaking everywhere badly! Since then it has been fine, then as of today,it leaked.
When it leaked a few months ago,I took it to Milwards of Lancing, from where i bought it and get it serviced, for them to have a look at.They could not find any leaks or leaky pipes etc,and stated it was just excess fuel leaking from the 'overflow' next to the tank.
I didn't realise the fuel tank had such a basic 'overflow' which means fuel just pours all over the garage forecourt!
Gonna take it to the Toyota guys in Peacehaven tomorow,(nearest Toyota specialists to Brighton)to see what they think.
Any advice meantime is greatly appreciated as ever.
Anyone know of any off-road days out near Brighton, that are quite safe?! (don't really wanna roll my surf for the sake of an afternoon's mayhem in the mud!)
    Thanks,
    Clive.

There is an overflow below where you put the nozzle in, just behind the fuel flap, which will drip on the tyre from inside the wheel arch... there should be a photo archive here of my second tank which might show the various connectors down to the main tank which might help.

Can't find the thread, found the images though...
Last image is without the bash plate... that is what replaces the drain plug... at least on the longranger tank...

          re;Leaking fuel tank

Hi folks. Thanks for the replies.I managed to fill the tank half full this eve, without it leaking too much, just a small trickle running down the side,(the part of the tank you can see by looking straight ahead near the rear wheel arch/chassis).I drove it home and had a look again, once parked, after a few hours and it's not leaking fuel now. This makes me think maybe its a worn rubber pipe or corroded clip, somewhere between the opening/fuel cap to the fuel tank.Is the entrance hole for the fuel connected by rubber hoses and the like into the tank itself?
Is this an easy diy job,as i cannot see much when looking underneath, even though my surf has a raised suspension, and theres loadsa space between the tyres and the wheel arch!
Thanks again for your ongoing help,
          Clive.

            re;Surf Fuel tank leak

Hi all.Just got a call back from toyota headquaters in peacehaven.
Appparently its a worn pipe near the overflow that needs replacing.£175 quoted.
Ridiculous i said, taking it somewhere else for a second quote.Failing that i'm buying a roll of gaffer tape at £1.75!

              re;Surf Fuel tank leak

Hi again.Just noticed on toyota's service checklist, that they noted my surf has leaking brake fluid, and is contaminated! Is this expensive to fix?
              Thanks,Clive.

What Rear Bike Racks for 1991 hilux surf?

Hi all.Got my surf fuel leak fixed and it sailed through the mot! Just got a slight oil leak coming from the turbo to fix now,and gotta sort out the 4 wheel drive gear stick,as it will not physically go into forward position!
Anywayz, todays question is; Does anyone know of a decent bike rack that will fit on the back of my 1991 hilux surf.It has a slide down rear glass panel, and drop down door.I need one that can accomodate 3 bikes.
                Any help as always appreciated,
                Thanks,Clive.

I think you'll find your only option for a surf is a tow ball mounted rack, or a spare tyre mounted rack if you have a rear spare, we have one of these from Halfrauds and it works fine (apart from making the light on the dash that tells you the spare rack is open flicker, but I think this was because I also use it for my kite buggy as well as a bike).
