  • turbocharger kaput?

Whilst out and about today, I returned to my car (1993 2.4 Surf )which had been runing perfectly and when starting, it drove very sluggishly with the turbo light off and not able to get much above 50mph. I know from other posts that this is a turbocharger problem although the suddeness of the change in performance was amazing.

    My real question is this...

When I opened up the bonnet the air intake pipe was broken, this must have happened some time ago as it was a complete break not a crack. So would the lack of air flow have caused this problem with the charger or is it that the charger has become full of rubbish it shouldn't have? Does it have a seperate air filter on the unit? Is this a simple matter of filter cleaning and replacing pipes or an expensive garage job.

As you can tell, not into home car repairs other than the most simple, so all help and advice much appreciated. Thanks

do you have any engine check lights on?when you say air intake i take it you mean the convelluted hose between the air filter and the intake hose from the turbo.(the plastic one )if you mean the hose between the turbo and the inlet manifold then yes this would make a big difference.(the one with efi stamped on it.)other than that check the hose has not split or come off of the turbo pressure boost switch.

I think the main thing to go on the turbo is the bearings and believe me (previous experience)you will know when they have gone as it will sound like a tin of nails being shaken around
If your turbo has gone you should be able to pick up a good 2nd hand one for about £100 but make sure you don't get a 3l one by mistake as they are alot more and differant
        The 2.4 is a CT20
        The 3.0 is a CT12B

like the others have said check everything out first

          check vacuum pipes first

hi, mine did same last week. checked the pipes and found one had come off - had to cable tie it back on as it kept falling off.

heres a pic of where mine went. Its not the same engine as mine, but the location of the tube into a sensor/relay/switch/whatever next to the air filter box is where mine came off. thats what is shown in red.

              Thanks to all...sorted

Thank you all very much for your responses. I tracked the problem down to a friendly mechanic who I'm sure was trying to do me a favour rather than job creation

The air intake hose had at some stage broken and tape had been used to seal it. Naturally after a time this came off and was sucked into the turbo. Fortunately it was a big enouugh lump to jam in and was easily removable without any damage....phew!!!

              Thanks again guys.

                  Turbo malfunction or missing pipe???

                  Hi Guys,

I am new to the Surfs, but have just driven my H plate 2.4 SSR 1500 miles non stop from Uk to Southern Italy with no probs.

There is however a niggle, and it is that the green turbo light comes on at start up and then is not seen again making me suspect that the turbo is not working properly. The car is also sluggish and down on power compared to what I had expected.

I took the inlet pipe off to the turbo and this is turning smoothly. I then checked the pipes to the little filter thing under the turbo high and low pressure switch (having looked at another posting on this site) and saw that there are only two little black pipes attached to the pressure switch and what appears to be a third nipple thing with no pipe attached. Do you think there may be a pipe missing or is this as it should be? Or do you have any other ideas how I can check this out?

                  Many thanks in advance

                  Dan

                    Try here...http://www.toyotasurf.asn.au/techsite/24table.htm

and click on turbo, sounds like the high pressure switch is playing up.
