i used to go over with work all the time in the late 1990's loved the place.

the expansion bottle should only be about 2 inches full upto the line at the bottom. i presume yours is a 2.4 there is a known problem with the design of the waterways on older heads some models were recalled in japan. new heads are available now in the uk

check thermostat & rad cap first darain the rad with both heater controls on hot so as to drain the heater pipes. thats your first step if fault still occurs have it pressure tested. this is cheap in comparrison to rebuiling engine to find it was one of the above in the 1st place

May be a possible air lock had moved, water pump.
A little test you can do, from absolute stone cold take of rad cap and check levels are OK.
With cap off start it up, it may just about overflow a little, if within a minute or so its pouring out I would say head. Ruling out stat on the basis you felt the rad hose and said you let it cool down so assume the stat is working.
When my head went I had no exhaust sauna, no water in the oil just exact same symptons as you. I did have slight loss of power and reduced mpg.
If it has been pressure tested and if it was done correctly it can't be the head, other than may be a blocked rad I hate to say my gut feeling is the head.
Say not always what you know, but always know what you say.
