  • Fuel Consumption

Just joined the ranks of Surf ownership after many years of Range Rovers (still have two of them though!). I recently bought a very nice 92 2.4TD EFi but over the last week or so of mixed driving the fuel consumption seems to be quite poor - in fact it's looking more expensive to run than the Range Rovers on LPG!!

I was wondering what sort of consumption I should be getting?

I got really excited the other week cause I managed 23mpg, then I got a fuel leak. Seriously you should get between 19 to 26mpg, my average over 5 years is 22mpg (and that is acurate).
    Gone from 4x4 to 1x2

      >24 = good
      20 -22 = realistic
<18 = poor but not uncommon

Sling some veg oil in the old girl!

20 litres from Makro for about £9.87

That'll bring the cost down substantially!

I get between 18-22 depending on how much my fuel pump is leaking at the time, and I've just stuck 20ltr veg oil in, so when I've used that tank full I'll let you know the figures. I do mainly urban cycle at the moment, no long runs due to worn steering idler and track rod.

i get roughly 200 km to 30 litres of fuel (15l veg + £15 diesel), i also have developed a minor fuel leak recently though.

equates to roughly 18.5mpg if my maths has gone right, mixed cycle. can get up to 21mpg extra urban, that's actually not bad, i was as low as 15mpg for a while and it seems to have come up since i went veggie

                  Me too

Like the original poster I have recently become a Surfer after more years than I care to remember of classic RR ownership. Much as I like the Surf I have to say that I do miss my 300TDi engine that gave me 30 mpg in the RR. My 2.4 non efi Surf gets 24 mpg local and the same long distance towing an empty trailer ( which is the back end of an LR 90, so not light!). The RR was also faster, my Surf struggles to cruise at 70, which I don't do anyway because I haven't yet ripped out the annoying 60 mph bell!
What may be the saving grace for the Surf is the ability, so they say, to run on cooking oil. I put my first lot of Lidl rapeseed oil in yesterday, 25% oil, 75% diesel. 59p per litre for the oil. Watch this space!
Why the Surf? Well, the RR (H plate) like so many others was quietly rusting away; MoT man said he couldn't get welding rods that would work on carpet! The Surf (J plate) is virtually pristine underneath and good for many more years yet, I hope.

                    just a note:
makro veg oil is now £11.35. a lot more than what it was 2 months ago.
i just bought 200 litres of the stuff.

i think with a decent air filter, the actuator/boost mod, and a good exhaust (preferably one that isnt baffled and is free flowing) you should be able to cruise at 65, mine does over 90 if i floor it long enough. i can sit at 90 happily but the boost is about 7psi out of the 10/11psi that it maxes out on.

I've got a 2.4TD SSRG and the top speed i get is about a ton empty and about 80-90 fully loaded, fuel wise i get about 300 miles out of a full tank.
