  • Vicous Fan adjustment (lower the start temp) procedure?

    Hi
I have had my head replaced with a Stevo head, rad cleaned out, thermostat checked etc. I still have some temp issues (more worry I think) but I am sure that my Viscous fan is not running as it should after reading all the threads on it. It does not roar like people have said! It is stiff when cold and free running when hot, so anyway I have decided to have a look at the silicon levels and replace the fluid. I thought as I am in there anyway I would like to lower the fan engage temp. I have read through all viscous fan threads on the board, took a time but had to be sure. Allthough mentioned and there are pics of the two adjuster screws, can anyone give me a definitive statement of how to adjust the start temp of the fan and which way to move the plate etc? The last thing I want is to adjust it the wrong way and have to take it all apart again to move it back?

Any fool proof help on this would be appreciated, Thanks.

    Adjusting bi-metal strip

Here's a link to a thread in Oz. That thread will discuss some aspects of the clutch and different fluids. There will also be a link to another thread where two different types of setting up the temperature took place.

Thanks for the thread info, it was one of the ones I had marked ready.
I wanted to know which way to adjust the switch-on temp. The answer if anyone else is looking for this is once it is parted and clean, ready to fill, just slacken the two screws and let it fall back (it will be spring loaded against the bi-metalic strip). That will bring it on earlier.

I am still not convinced that it has made much difference but need to drive it further first.

Job took 2 hours start to finish. Take off top hose, take out rad cowl. Loosen and remove the 4 bolts and remove fan.
Remove blades, then using an impact driver remove the very stiff clutch screws and part the unit.
Clean out old fluid with petrol or simular.
I tested mine in a pan of water on a cooker with a temp gauge after adjusting the screws and you can check to make sure it is working correctly.
Then refill the rear section while standing it on the mount, mate the two sides ensuring that the fiddly rubber seal is tucked in place (took about five mins, very fiddly), then put all the screws back fit and refit the hose and cowl.
Refill / top up the water lost from the top hose and off you go. Far easier than I thought it was going to be.

If it still doesn't do the trick its the ATF cooler mod next (hopefully this will have done it though).
