  • Still goddamn tapping!!!!

If anyone remembers i posted a while back regarding a top end tapping noise on my surf, most probably due to me being an arse and driving it with no oil!...aaaanyhow! its been in and out of garage and i've played with it but it's still $$$$$$ tapping and driving me crazy!!!

Here's what i know so far:

    .Tappets are all within tolerences
    .Lifters seem fine
.Injectors were knackered but have since been re-coned & are now good
.Has got plenty of oil 15-40 turbo diesel valvoline
.Has had forte top end treatment & wynn's lifter treatment

My only other thought on this is could it be the oil pump thats shot away and is not pumping the oil to the top end properly? it did make a strange shriek noise on the dreaded day as i drove it down the road with no oil!, could this have been the pump siezing?? or is my surf just doomed to an eternity of annoying tapping

any help in any form would be greatly appreciated

Has the oil pressure been checked? with an independant gauge.

Does the tapping happen all the time, or go away/get worse with higher/lower revs?

Could be the oil pump, nothing lasts forever.

Oil pressure hasn't been checked as far as i'm aware, how or where would i get that done?
tapping is always there, seems worse sometimes but nothing in particular seems to make it worse or better, its a very minimal change at best.

I think they remove the ol pressure switch and screw a gauge into it and the test drive it.

is it a tappet sound? does it come on with opening and closing of valves? Should be constant and increase if you rev it. If so then its a tappet fault

My top end tapping turned out to be a badly worn piston skirt on no 1 cylinder .... sounds just like a bad tappet when i used to rev it

im just searching through threads and found this..
now i get a tapping noise SOMETIMES. my oil level is always dead on max, ive bought recon injectors @£220, i regularly change oil
actually this noise only started happening after i changed oil and filter!
as i said it only happens sometimes and when it does it only does it from tickover up to 1800rpm so there is only a 1000rpm range.
to me it does sound like a tappety noise but when i had this noise at tickover (it comes and goes and is not always there at tickover) i unscrewed the oil cap and expected the noise to get louder as it escaped through the hole.. but it didnt so could it be the pump itself?

how did you get on mr t? this noise is doing my nut and a 'noise' cant be good in the long run.
im thinking of just getting the pump done on the safe side. how much are they to buy? are they run of the damn cam belt?
              Oh Nana, what's my name?

I'd try some 'Lucas Oil Stabiliser' you might find it localy (lucas have a store finder online) I'm no fan of 'snake oils' but this stuff has had stunning results, made an old Jeep run like a sewing machine!

Their auto transmission fix has also worked on a box of neutrals

I would put some different oil in before adding additives and changing pumps ect! I have never come across a tapping pump? I have came across timing being out and getting a diesel knock at low revs. But a diesel knock is different to a tappet knock. 9 times out of ten the diesel knock will go off when revved.
A tappet/valve noise is there all the time

i put some oil stabiliser in and it did nothing..
could well be diesel knock - i wouldnt know what that sounded like.
noise always goes under load so usually 2k+
thing is this noise only happened after doing the oil and filter change, so its started to happen when brand new oil has been put in...
ive been up to leeds and back and have been up to 90mph without trouble - it still feels like it wants to pull more at 90 but the revs are quite high so didnt bother.

when the noise isnt there its actually quite a quiet car. i used to have overhead valve cars and they were always tappety and mine isnt anything like that at all. all you can hear is the diesel being burnt

so its best i check the timing first before i go to extremes

ok ive just got back from a diesel specialist called watson diesels. came highly recommended and they were friendly and have that sense of wisdom about them. you know when you tell someone somthing then their hand is on their chin and they listen until youve finished, then analyse and come up with an answer..

well i made sure i got the noise to come back, and he took a look
after a short while i fumed out the adjacent workshop, they all come out and asked what i was running on

the verdict was one of the belts. they seemed sure it was the belt off the vacuum pump, i asked what that was for and was told brakes.

so this is the 2nd time ive been told its a belt so now im content its nothing serious

                          good to hear
i like those sort of people. i was being taught a few things of a well known performance engine builder, and i liked how he listened to the way i had worked things out on my own even though i may have got a bit wrong he listened to it all and calmly showed me the error. cam timing was stressful when i didnt know how! had to use a dial gauge on the block/piston...
