Obviously lots of us have had it done, my 2.4td 1992 Surf, is going in to Toyota tomorrow for testing, I've no doubt that the head or head gasket has gone, what kind of costs will I be looking at?? Just so as I know whether to sit down when the phone rings!!

If you are going to get a Toyota Garage to do a new head, expect over £2000. To do it yourself, costs are around £750. Toyota Garages are not the cheapest labour rate going and I think they book the Head replacement on a 2.4 at 14 hours. Expect to pay a labour rate of £45 per hour plus and more for the head than you would from Milners or UK Cylinder Heads. Also it will be more expensive for the extras like Oil, Antifreeze, Gaskets etc.

Mind you, the Warranty should be decent hopefully if they are a decent garage plus they should be able to get hold of the correct instructions on how to do it.

    Cheers

A Nissan garage did my engine replacement, It cost £1700 but I believe you pay for what you get. They did a top job in 4 days and changed every belt all fluids, flushed everything serviced the aircon and gave 30,000 mile warranty. The labour wasn't cheap but If you pay some yts grease monkeys to do it then expect some trouble. (not that all yts are grease monkeys but certain Moto**** quick*** places around me seem to change their staff every month, and Iv'e had some bad experiences ! eg rounding off wheel nuts, brakes seizing after being changed etc.)
