Thanks for all the great ideas and advice guys, finally got it all put back together (about a month ago) and she has been back on the road ever since, the problem now is that she will only do about 25Km before overheating !!!! Can't take her ay further, as she overheats again and again !!! she just about gets me to work at the mo !!! Oh and It takes her about 20-30 secs to fire up and i get loads of black smoke everytime i start her !!! Got het booked in to a guy in Newport on wednesday who is a Toy trained fitter who specialises in old Toys !! Hopefully he can make her well again !!!! I'm out of ideas and time now !!!!! IGGISAIL

It could be tha radiator, the wifes 2.4 had a very similar problem with her motor once the new head had been fitted, would be fine for about 20 miles then overheat after driving up a hill, it wouldn't cool down again until clap cold. it tured out to be a blocked rad, the previous owner had used a few "radwelds" to cure leaks and it was blocked solid!

Agreed - could be the radiator.

On Salisbury Plain a week ago my rad sprung a small leak. Symptoms were temp gauge rising, expansion tank full and really bubbling. Hardly any water left in the system.

RAC man refilled it, cleared air lock, tested for combustion gases (clear, phew), pressure tested the cooling system - at which time we spotted the leak.

Also, last year on the Plain, mud caked and blocked my rad and nearly blew the head.

I'd take the rad out and make sure all the fins are completely clear of any crud, get a hose in and give it a serious enema - engine block as well.

When you've got the rad off, take the cam belt cover off and have a look at your water pump - maybe its failed.

              Any news yet.

I got a 92 ssr-g that is doing exac tly the same, any news yet?

Mine doesn't seem to be circulating properly though, just replaced head with new one, thermostat, water pump, cap, not the rad though as it seems fine.

Drive it a few miles and temp guage reads just under half but it has no heat from heater until temp shoots up then you get heat - usually occurs going up a slight hill, then heat stops temp goes down to half again for another mile or so then heat back and temp shoots up.

Well and truly burped, but viscous fan doesn't seem to be working properly. seems to lose drive as it gets warmer not the other way around. I can understand fan causing overheating but can't get my head around the water not circulating.

sounds like(you aint gonna like it) a blocked rad.when you bled it did you do it with the rear heater matrix set to hot?
                Non intercooled nothing.
