I have noticed that the water in the expansion bottle has a slight film of oil on it. 1990 2LT-E. Engine starts and runs perfectly, and doesn't use oil or water. Any suggestion as to cause, and any repairs, appreciated.

Have you flushed the coolant out yourself or just topped up the existing stuff.

oops
black sludge sounds like head gasket to me m8 id dran and flush it all out refill with fresh from a clean source and see if it returns if it does get the head tested for possible gasket m8black n tan
