  • new engine

Hi guys. I overheated last week and was told by RAC that the head gasket was gone. A friend of a friend has stripped it and said there is water $$$$ing out cylinders 2 and 4. He says i need a new engine or try to get pistons and liners. What advice can anyone give me. I need this on the road in four weeks as i am off to south of France for a fortnight towing the caravan. Regards Garry.

First thing I would do is keep my friend away from it. Second thing I would do is remove the head and look for the inevitable cracks between the valves. Third thing I would do is check the block for flatness. Fourth thing I would do is buy a new head, gaskets, stretch bolts from Stevo and fit using the correct procedure and torque settings. Alternately get it delivered to Stevo for him to do. Chances are you have cracked the head and a new head ( has to be the upgraded one the 3L type) properly fitted will give you your surf back. Look forward to parting with around 12000 pounds. I seriously doubt that you need a new engine or pistons or liners or any of that stuff but first move is get the head off for a looksee. ( That is after you have told Friend to keep away). Dont give to anyone who you dont have total faith in either. Ive seen 1500 pounds spent on a 1000 pound job cause an idiot did it first time.

            New head

Buy a new head from Miliner, about £600 for bare head. Grind your valves in. Get you mate to do it as long as he follow correct torque setting and procedure. You will be fine.
Hard work putting it all back together though Lol.
Those japs got very small hands.

I strongly advise getting a new head from STEVO as some other suppliers are selling the original heads, This will lead to same problem happening again.
