  • Hard Starting Cold+Hot

I hope someone can help because I hate paying other people to fix my stuff. I've only owned it for 4 weeks and limited on time.

I have a 93 Surf with a 2LTE (Diesel). It turns over fine but it's hard to start when cold or hot. I checked the glow plug system and it's working fine. Also changed the fuel filter, nothing changed. It does blow a bit of black smoke but I haven't converted the EGR valve yet. I thinking of three things, # it's lossing it's prime. #2 Injector pump leaking internaly. #3 Just running too rich.

Someone did tell me that the primer pump on the fuel filter leaks air in when old...I put some 90 wt oil in the top of the primer pump thinking it would seal but it didn't seem to make a difference. Please help with thoughts or any other websites links. Thanks

Could be the injectors are blocked. Have you tried either filling the fuel filter with neat Wynns (or similar) diesel injector cleaner to see if that will make a difference or putting a full bottle in a nearly empty tank (say around 10 ltrs left) and running it like that to get it cleaned through.

It's also useful to use injector cleaner in the fuel tank every 3rd tankful just to keep everything working smoothly.

Did you check the resistance of each glow plug individually with the glow plug rail disconnected or just check voltage readings. Voltage will just show the circuit is working not the condition of the glow plugs. I'd say your problem is glow plugs need replacing.

I've tried the injector cleaner but with about a 3/4 full tank. I'll try another bottle again tomorrow. I did check the glow plug resistance, I don't know what it should be I just know it wasn't 0 or OL. Do you know what it should be exactly? It doesn't really seem like the glow plug system since it doesn't want to fire up when the engine is already hot.

          1. Black smoke normally means over fuelling or blocked or dirty air filter.
          2. Also, unscrew the fuel filler cap and see if it hisses. This will indicate that the fuel tank breather is blocked and creating a vacuum making fuel delivery to the fuel filter/pump difficult.
          3. Check the fuel lines on and around the fuel filter and pump are not leaking or letting air in.
          4. Check glowplug fuse hasn't blown, it's the 80A fuse in the engine bay fusebox.
