  • Best Coolant

Hi all , just wondering which is the best coolant to use in my 2.4 ssr-g (does the "g" mean its the base model ) , she has 152,000 kms on her and doesnt seem to have too many problems other than the knocking on full lock when u set off ( i have greased all steering and bump stops) , but want to flush out the system and use something that may help stop any inherent cooling problems before they start.
    Cheers

i just re filled my coolant system with the comma xstream longlife red ethylene glycol.a lot of people prefer the toyota red as its called, apparently the comma stuff comes in red, blue and green. i was told that green will mix with red and blue but you cant mix red and blue together as it will gel up.id check to see what type you have in your system.5l of the red comma cost me about 13 plus vat,its meant to last 5 years but i aint gonna risk it while your at it id fit a new cap and thermostat preferably genuine ones!! base model is ssr then ssr ltd then theres a v, g ,x, but not sure what order!!

Although has often been noted these letters are only a vague guide. Two theories are thrown about, usually that the original owner decided on a particular model and then promptly set about changing the spec, occasionally by having an option removed but more commonly by having several added.
The other theory is that at the end of the assembly line one guy had the job of sticking his hand in a bucket and extracting random letters to stick on 'em

Nope. Any combination of blue/green *should* mix, but red will mix with bugger all. Red has to be put into a perfectly clean system, antifreeze wise. You'll need to flush the system through several times with demineralised/deionised water if you plan on using red and have a different colour antifreeze in there now. Green would be your better option, if you're wanting to do the quick flush and replace method. Shorter working life than the red, though. Could never see the point of the red in all honesty. Leaving a cooling system unflushed and refilled for 5 years is well on my list of never going to happen.

thanks for clearing that up it did seem wierd the guy told me blue n green will mix and red and green will mix so i thought why shouldnt blue n red mix then?not that i would mix any together in the surf with its track record !! i did a straight drain and flush with a 50/50 miix of red comma, but i like yourself matt have absolutely no intention of leaving it alone for 5 years cheers
