The breather pipe runs from the top of the tank and goes through a grommet into the chassis rail just in front of the right hand rear wheel. There is a non return valve in the line just above the tank that seems to corrode and block up quite easily. It was blocked on my 2.4 and although it didn't cause a problem with running, there was a pronounced 'hiss' when the cap was removed. I have replaced the pipe on both my trucks with a new one running up to the engine bay (same as the diff breathers)
Ok, so what do I need to do to replace it? Is it hard to do or should I call a machnic?
If you lay under the truck and look or feel on top of the fuel tank from the prop shaft side you'll find where the breather pipe connects on top. I think it's around a 1/4" bore pipe. Pull the old pipe off and run a new length up into the back of the engine bay and stick a small in-line fuel filter in the end. Easy-peasy
i'd imagine it's stucking the fuel out but not allowing air back into the tank to replace the fuel so as the preasure builds it allows less and less fuel into the engine. but i might be wrong

Yeah i'd guess the same thing! When the pump is ...well pumping it will be causing a vacuum unless it has air to draw in to replace the fuel being drawn! After a while of running the engine it will reach a point where it just cant draw anymore fuel because theres no air to displace it! So....it will just starve the engine of fuel causing stalling!! Give the little gromet a poke and see what happens mate!!
Yeah - vacuum & so on is right. My Dad had a Ford Granada years ago that was fitted with the wrong fuel cap - should have been vented and wasn't. The vacuum built up so much it actually started to collapse the fuel tank
I drilled a small hole in my petrol cap on one car I had, as it did exactly the same - vacuum in the tank stopping fuel flow.

My mate has a ford escort van, he had a problem with non starting and a bit of stalling. Turned out he had an air leak in the pump itself. Replaced the pump, job done.
With diesels, it *should* be simple: fuel plus air plus compression = bang.
If its stalling, then its one of those 3. So check your filters, pipes, injectors, *pump* and suchlike.
Looked at the engine of my mates Boxter the other day. Oh. what engine, its just a big plastic and alloy box with a couple of wires and tubes!!! Mend THAT on your drive if you can!
