  • cam shaft oil feed

    hi all

    have just recieved a cylinder head (bought new from e-bay), for my 1991 2.4 surf ive compared the new one to the old and they seem identical in every way except that the new one does not have a hole drilled into the first cam shaft bearing mounting which i assume provides the oil feed for the cam shaft. perhaps its just been a manufacturing error. im thinking one option is to mark a new hole using the bearing shell and drill it out rather than have the hassle of sending the head back, i guess otherwise left as it the cam shaft is going to run dry n sieze up.
    has anyone come across this before or have any thoughts.

    internally the castings are the same that is there is provision for an oilway and one of the holes is already drilled that is the one which is blanked off with a ball bearing

    pics would be good here.
    before you start the work
    if its improved it may of been left out for a reason, and drilling a hole may be a bad idea

        Doubt it, engine parts are drilled/milled on automatic CNC machines these days.

          the bearing that goes in that spot should have the hole in the same place. all i can think that would happen is that bearing would get dry and wear out then start rattling, unless oil is fed to it from somewhere else ?
          my first engine i built has the cam right next to the crank. there was no oil feed to it at all, except what was splashed about from the crank and it relied on this and also what oil that drained down from the head.
          me personally would check with the supplier. just in case it is a dodgy head. i know how annoying it is putting something all together only to then have to take it all back off again.
          i dont think you will do you cam in. just the bearing then it will start to make a noise - then its best not to run it at this point.

            oh i forgot, im quite sure that my cross flow engine didnt have holes on every bearing! but dont quote me, it was years ago

              got in touch with the supplier who confirms that this has been an omission during manufacture. As one post says automatic machines are used in production, seems likley that a drill has snapped on the machine and at least one or more may have slipped through missing this oilway. we've drilled the hole out with a cordless drill easily enough and will get on with refitting.

                Do Not put in with no oil feed hole. Happend to me, the guy who put the new head on put the oil feed on the wrong side, then sold me the Surf, then a day later the cam sieze causing the t-belt to slip and one new head later its still in the shop. Note it ran about 3000KM before it siezed.
