Black smoke and real bad mpg

Ive got a 92 2.4 td ssr-g auto with 74k miles and suprise suprise it chucks out black smoke badly on cold hard driving and a bit once its warmed up, and you can really see it at night in peoples headlights, its really starting to get me down not to mention the cars doing under 200 miles on a full tank ,,,, something has to be done,

Ive read up on this forum and great it is should I a dump some redex in and wait and see or b. do the egr valve thing or c do both at the same time ???

Get a diesel specialist to set the pump timing up as these are a pig. Also chuck the old Redex diesel clean in or equivelant. Worth a try !

It sounds as though you need a derv expert but get them to check the pump it self as that sounds like a recon job. staines deisels are spot on and in the long run it is very much cost effective.
Do you get a rattle noise on acceleration ? as it might well be the turbo.
Take the top pipe off and see if you have loads of oil in there if yes given your options here that is good news as it will need a seal kit.
Not on sale to the gen pub but I can get them if required.

Before you go spending money remember it is a diesel, next time look at the 18 month old diesel in front of you and see how much that smokes on acceleration.
Mines got the EGR disconnected and has the redex treatment on a regular basis and it still puffs out a bit on start up and under hard acceleration. As for the night smog its just a haze that can be seen in the cars lights behind you, its not there during the day.
Relax as long as its not huge amounts of blackish smoke all the time and not the white steam sauna coming from the exhaust it sounds pretty normal to me.
