  • Major Diesel Leak !!!

I have a major diesel leak that I cant find the source of. Ive changed the pump top seal, and Its definately not from there. I cant see were the fuel is coming from, but its somehow running down behind the the passenger side engine mount and dripping from where the mount joins the block then onto the front crossmember. I have felt round the pump and the fuel lines, they are all dry. Im stumped, and its really a bad leak so I have to find it. The only thing that I can think of is could it be coming from the cylinder head? The top of the block is quite oily from the cylinder head gasket blow, so is it conceivable that diesel is escaping from the head before it gets into the combustion chamber? Any help please!

Got the same thing myself after the head was change, garage accept no liability, but after having a look myself it seems to be coming from the "distributor block" seal, but I'm not sure if this will require the removal of the pump itself, I hope not coz that will get expensive!

Whats the "distributor block " seal, and where is it in relation to the pump? I cant be sure about where the fuel is leaking from, and the head hasnt been touched, but there is a small oil leak from the head direcly below the inlet manifold which does seem a little too wet for just oil. Whatever else is leking from there is tracking down the block too far back for me to see clearly. But can fuel leak from the head gasket?

Connections on the fuel filter OK?
Fuel pipes on the rear of the pump OK?
Fuel pipes at the injectors OK?

These are the main areas to check, otherwise it's the pump thats leaking.

Thats the section on the back of pump where all the fuel lines connect. It' a steel block mounted to rear of alloy pump body.

Have you checked all the fuel lines including the return from the injectors. Maybe a return line hose is leaking or disconnected.

Correct, I know this coz I've been doing loads of research on "how to fix my leaking fuel pump without getting a second mortgage"

There must be a seal/gaskit between this and the pump body, coz mine is leaking from around this area and I cannot for the life of me see exactly where it is, unless it is from the fuel cut off solenoid.
I've checked all pipes, hoses, and connections in the vacinity but no joy, no easy fix.
Maybe if TonyN is looking in he may be able to advise the complexity of changing this seal, or what the likely cost of removing the pump and replacing the seals without the cost of refurbishing the pump( unless this is necessary)

Ive had my hand round the pump and felt all the fuel lines/ connections and all are dry. The pump body is dry as well, both around the sides and underneath. At the rate the leak is dripping on the floor then any fuel around these points would be very apparent because it far more than just a weep. The first place that I can see fuel dripping free from the engine is halfway along the passenger side engine mount. Its not dripping onto the mount from above though, it is seeping behind the mount (between the mount and the engine block) then running along the mount and dripping off halfway. As the mount slopes at an upward angle as it approaches the engine, the fuel must be running down the engine block. if it were dripping into the engine mount arm then it would have to defy gravity and run uphill to get between the engine and the mount if you see what I mean. Thats why I wondered if it was conceiveble for it to be escaping from the cylinder head or inlet manifold and tracking down the block.

If it appears to be coming from higher up, check the injectors for leaks.

                    Leak at the back

Just posted an enquiry on the same subject.

Theres a little plate at the side of the pump low down against the block
just where you can hardly see it or get a tool to it. Get a torch and a mirror on a stick and you can just see the top of it. I think thats where the leak is coming from.

If or when I get it fixed I'll get back and tell you how
