  • No green turbo light!

    Hi guys,

I posted an earlier enquiry regarding the red engine warning light on on my dash a few days ago, well i managed to find a so called 'specialist' who decoded the fault as number 22, but this doesn't exist so i am assuming he miss read it and it should have been 2 (it flashes twice and then a few seconds later flashes twice again).
I drove it for the first time tonight since the red light came on and yes, the green turbo light has not come on, and it is clearly not working as it's slugish and there's no whine from the turbo.
My question is this: Is it safe to drive with a faulty turbo for a short while or will i cause any damage, also is my next best route to contact a turbo specialist as all the wiring looks OK?

    Any help much appreciated

Check these out first, would also think that it shold have been 2
    1 - Normal
2 - Turbo boost pressure sensor
    4 - Coolant temperature sensor
    5 - Correction resistance (Pump)
6 - Pump speed sensor (Pump)
    7 - Throttle position sensor
8 - Intake air temperature sensor
    9 - Vehicle speed sensor
    10 - Starter switch
11 - Switch sign (Vehicle not in P or N or A/C on)
12 - Timer control valve (Pump)
    13 - Crank position sensor

so before you spend out money on the turbo its self check the boost sensor.
Say not always what you know, but always know what you say.

I read in a surf owners manual that the turbo light only comes on when there is too much boost pressure in the manifold and it recomends that you seek urgent attention having said that my mate has a 2.4 and the light has been on since the day he bought it and its been ok. Dont know if ive been any help, I'm sure someone on here will beable to help further.

if the green light does not come on when the turbo starts to boost then the sensour is not working and in turn will not tell the ECU to enrich the fule and the car will feel slugish. the red light will come on if the turbo over boosts ie. waste gate may too tight this will leave a code of two flashes on the fault record.

The red engine check lamp will also come on if there is no Turbo boost as the turbo pressure sensor will sense no pressure and as such will think itself faulty - or rather the ecu will think the turbo pressure sensor is faulty. Only way to really check is to fit a boost gauge or take it to a turbo specialist if your local Diesel specialist is a numbskull.

And it should be safe to drive without the Turbo working as long as the ECU knows that it is not functioning and adjusts the mixture accordingly so that the engine is not running too rich. Apart that is from the fact that it takes so long to pull away and you may end up with a truck up your exhaust.

          Cheers

Check vacuum hose to and from Turbo Pressure Sensor. This is often the problem if disconnected or split.

              green turbo lights

              Warren,
I think your mechanic misread the code. It defenitely seems like it's a code 2. Two short flashes followed by a pause then a repeat of the two short flashes. This indicates that you have only ONE trouble code
              1. For NORMAL CONDITION (code 1). When the switch is on, the Mulfunction Indicator Light MIL, lights up for 0.25 second. Off for 0.25 sec. On again for 0.25 sec. Repeating in the same rythmic pattern.
              2. For CODE 2 (Turbo). From the moment you switch on the ignition, there is a 4.0 sec pause. Then the light flashes for 0.5 sec., Off 0.5 sec., On 0.5 sec then a pause of 4.5 seconds. On 0.5 sec, Off 0.5 sec, On 0.5 sec, Pause 4.5 seconds. It keeps on repeating.
              3. For ALL other single digit trouble codes (code 3 to 9). Same as #2 but the MIL will flash the corresponding number of times between each 4.5 second pause. Eg. For code 4. From switch on. Pause 4.0 secs. On 0.5, Off 0.5, On 0.5, Off 0.5, On 0.5, Off 0.5, On 0.5, Pause 4.5. Cycle repeats.
              4. For ALL two digit trouble codes (code 10 to 13). There is a 1.5 sec pause between the first and second digit. Eg. Code 12: Pause 4.0, On 0.5, Pause 1.5, On 0.5, Off 0.5, On 0.5, Pause 4.5. Then cycle repeats. I don't know how Code 10 is shown.
              5. For more than 1 trouble codes there is a 2.5 sec pause between codes. Eg. A code 2 and a code 12: Pause 4.0, On 0.5, Off 0.5 On 0.5,(for the code 2), Pause 2.5, On 0.5, Pause 1.5, On 0.5, Off 0.5, On 0.5, (for the code 12) Pause 4.5. Then the cycle repeats

Guys, my 3.0l 94 SSRx KZN130, Never has either turbo lights on and I have not noticed a perfcormance drop but the MPG has been a little high but not maddly high.

Can someone 100% clarify if the turbo green light should indeed come light under normal operation ? or if any light should ?

I dont hear the turbo whine anymore but though my ears were used to it and filter it out now.

Don't think that any 3.0ltr surfs have a turbo light.

Andy, with all this talk I got carried away. There is a turbo light on the rev counter clock face, its not that ?
