  • Fault diagnosis?

    Hi All,
I have had a 2.4 1991 Surf for 5 years, no problems at all. 3 weeks ago the bottom hose clip failed, all water flung out, I stopped straight away, (wasn't overheating at all, just hissing noise, then as I pulled over temp gauge rose and I stopped engine) waited for AA on M11 hard shoulder!!
Garage collected surf, reattached bottom hose, new clips, changed thermostat, checked for gases in the water, none there. I drove round locally, max 16 miles for 3 weeks, then drove M11/ A14 route again. Takes me 1 1/2 hours to get to destination, Surf fine no overheating. Started for home 4 1/2 hours later, drove for 20 mins, no overheating, (I was feeling paronoid cos garage man didn't think he had fixed problem, so I was checking temp guage a lot.) Then lots of hissing, temp gauge rose, I pulled onto grass verge of A14, waited for AA. Heater hose torn in 1/2. Both times water expansion tank cap blown off. I had checked Surf before I left home, water was fine, put small amount of oil in.
Is this, a head problem? Or a duff hose prob, or rad cap, or what.
Thank you, sorry bit long, enjoyed all other threads.

    Hello

Paranoia says it sounds like head probs - but

It could have been an air lock. If there were no gases present when tested then head 'should' be OK.

New hose, new rad cap, follow the thread on burping the cooling system, join religious cult and pray to new found God!

      Experiance says head probs...

Sometimes the smaller cracks will close up unless its really hot, so you pass the pressure/sniffer test unless its properly heated up, sometimes it take leaving them running for a good 1/2 hour to get it show up.
