  • Loss of water

Hi all, new problem. Each morning I check the water level in my Surf (after replacing two heads and three engines!) and within recent times I have noticed two things, there is now an oil residue building up on the radiator cap and I am loosing water. Each day I have to add about half litre of water. I modified my radiator to use a filler cap so I have direct filling into my radiator. My mechanic said the oil build up could be from the oil cooler leaking into the cooling system. I am worried about the loss of water, nothing seems to be working right in this surf!

The oil cooler leaking into the cooling system ( or the other way round) is something that happens, its the housing that the oil filter screws into on the side of the block.

Normally just needs new gaskets on the oil cooler where it bolts to the inside of the housing.

How the hell do you break 3 engines!!!

        Broken Engine

TonyN, actually it was pretty easy to break the three engines. The dirst was when I had the van for just about 3 months. It overheated and the mechanic (at that time) said we should replace the head and re-build the engine. This did not work after spending over $12,000 TT dollars. So I replaced the engine. After about 1 year overheated again and we replaced the engine and transmission. Then overheated again, and I replaced the head once more, now the problem we are facing. I heck my water and oil daily and still have these problems. Maybe my Surf is just a lemon as the 4 wheel drive is also not working.

That sucks, but a rebuilt engine should work if its built properly, and you rarely need to go that far after an overheat, Make sure your not using original 2L 2.4TD heads, it'll crack as soon as it gets warm again, try to find a 3L head (Engine type, from the 2.8L trucks, not the 3liter 1KZ/TE engines)

            3l

Thanks, I should be re-opening this engine within the next two weeks to check on the loss of water. We do have a major problem trying to source these parts here in the West Indies, and when we do get them they are very expensive.

as tony said, make sure you do get the 3L head, because living where you do is an overheating problem just waiting to happen. Put some vents into your bonnet too, will help a little.
i swear, it was like that when i got here...

                Vent

Thanks Logey, my mechanic did suggest that we lift the hood using some washers. We did condem all the heater lines that take water into the van for the heating system. I may look into the purchase of a hood scoop.
